check engine light

Ok guys I have a 96 F350 swr, 4x4, with a 7.3 and an automatic transmission. Here lately my check engine light comes on periodicly. The gauges all good, runs good, the only thing I can tell the difference is that when the light is on the transmission shifts real hard into each gear up and the same way down. That is the only thing I can tell the difference in. I would take it to our dealership but havent had much luck with them(it always seems they are trying real hard to make a few extra bucks). I have always been a fan of this forum just never really had any problems(knock on wood) til now. Oh and also when the light is on it sure seems the truck is running real hard lots of power.

Any help would be great!!! Thank you in advance

Mike

First, WELCOME to the forum.
Do you have access to an scanner? if so make a scan and wait for the results.

Yes you should check it, its the VSS is easy to clean it, its in the upper part of the pumpking, its a connector, just unplug, check it for water, corrosion or debris and reinstall it. you can try. good luck.

ok first off thanks for the help, but it didn't work. I have replaced the VSS and it didn't change anything. I have read some other post here lately and they sound like mine except mine doesn't jump out of gear and my o/d light never flashes. When the light is on is the only time I have an issue with it. When the light is off, the truck runs like a dream. Any other suggestions would be really great, otherwise I guess to the dealership it goes.

Thanks again. Mike

Certainly the CPS is the place to start. You can also check the regional forums here to see if someone has a scanner in your area. Also a tranny shop will be able to scan it for you.

Welcome to FTE!

Are you sure or your are talking about the Fuel Pressure Regulator?, and if so, what was the problem to understand how something in the fuel would affect your shifting. Any way congrats for the fix.
