I just had my transmission over-hauled by a guy that has been building these transmissions forever. I've put probably 1500 miles on it, and it pulls and drives great. Very impressed with it. I run Eric's Xtreme Street on it. Tonight I raced a pretty quick mustang that claimed to be throwing down some nice power, and usually I can beat a 4.6 mustang easily. This one held with me at my bed, and after 100 I pulled away like he was sitting still. He had talked a lot of crap, so I pushed it a little bit more. Also before anyone bad mouths me we did this on a closed road in the county. The road is about 3 miles and belongs to a guy I know, its awesome for racing.
My truck does have head studs, and the motor thus far is pretty sound. Anyway after racing I smelt transmission fluid. This is the first time I've pushed my truck this hard ever. So I brought it home, parked it went in. I came back out noticed a puddle, not a real real bad puddle and it was not thick, just more like a light puddle. It always looks worse then what it is. I looked under my truck and on the passenger side there is a line that runs into the transmission. It looked like the fluid might of been coming from there but hard to tell given its blown all over everything.
My buddy told me his truck would do this, and it was from pressure in the transmission, and it was blowing out the vents. I do not know how true this. I plan on calling the guy in the morning and asking his opinion as well since he built it.
It has stage 1 clutches, a brand new torque convertor, all the lines and filters were flushed/changed. It has the shift kit to prevent case lugs from coming apart. It also has full synthetic transmission fluid in it. I was told by multiple people that any shop rebuilding one of these transmissions would be a disaster. This guy is use to work for Ford, and he did a damn good job. Just trying to get some answers quicker.
The fluid is not low, checked it. Its right on the money. It doesn't smell burnt or look burnt. The transmission shifts and acts fine.
Was the dipstick tube down properly when you checked it? Cold and hot up to proper level? If so I doubt you have a problem, oil spreads thin and covers a lot of area. I would chat with the tranny guy, I wonder if it was a bit to full. Mine has never over flowed and I push it hard, all the time.
Dipstick tube was down properly. It looked fine. I was just hoping and pray it didn't puke it through the seals. They are all fresh I am sure. Scared me a bit, but I ran to a buddies and romped on her pretty hard (not 130 MPH hard), and it didn't puke anything. I left it sitting in a dry spot and no puddles a small drip just from the fluid from before, but no new leaks.
The guy that built my transmission also worked at a Ford Dealership. I know guys that have went to these shops and all of them are so upset with the build, and they almost never act right. I known this guy for awhile and his reputation is excellent. He had my tranny rebuilt in 3 days, for 2098 dollars. It showed he put the proper amount of fluid in it on my sheet of paper. I suppose its possible it was still over filled.
When it was installed it probably was filled to the "full" mark cold and when it gets hot it becomes overfilled. That's why it needs to be check when at operating temp, the fluid will expand with temp.
My transmission guy is recommended a bigger cooler? I had hoped I didn't have to go that route. I think it was just over filled as well. It made it appear that it was leaking out of that line going into it, when in reality it was just where it puked it on that side.
Noticed a puddle last night under truck again. Not a very large one but a puddle. Drove it today and its leaking after romping. Hasn't lost any off the stick. Appears to be where its suppose to. I can't find where its leaking exactly. There is one hard trans line that goes in on the passenger side. The fluid seems to be leaking down on that side and onto the cross member where the transmission bolts to. Is there a vent up top there? Its hard to pin point where its coming from. Its not up any further so I have narrowed it down to that location.
