I have a 97 ranger 4x4 with the 4.0l V6 automatic transmission. I have a miss that seems only to occur when the engine is warm. Sometimes it is hard to start unless I let it sit for a few minutes after being warm. The "check engine" light stays on all the time. I have had the injectors cleaned, the fuel filter changed twice, the air filter changed, and the spark plugs changed. I suspect the O2 sensor. I also think it is running rich. I am going to take it to the dealer but, I do not want to go in uninformed. There are about 70,000 miles on it. Any help will be appreciated.
The check engine light is the first thing to get checked. When it is on that means the PCM had seen a sensor or output that it doesnt like. The dealer will scan the system which will retrieve a trouble code that should point them in the right direction.
When did it start running bad? At the same time the light came on?
It started running bad about the same time the "check engine" light came on. The garage that installed the parts put it on there obd-II code reader but could not pin point the problem. Every time he reset the "check engine" light it would run good for a while then the light would come back on and it would act up again.
As long as the light has been on and the code hasnt been cleared there should be a code there. If the garage couldnt find the problem it might be time to take it somewhere else. or post the code here and we'll see if someone here can help.
Update - I finally found the problem with the truck. After new altenator, plugs, wires, TPS, battery, & coil pack. I broke down and took it to a shop. They found antifreeze in cylinder 6. It has a bad headgasket at cylinder 6. They sucked the cylinder out cleaned/changed the plug and it runs like a scalded dog. He wants to change the engine out for new everything for $4,300. Ouch! I am going to try the miracle in a bottle for now that he suggested but did not guarenty to work. It is a big diapointment but the truck runs better than I ever remembered for now.
Well on a 4.0 it can be the intake gaskets not necessarily a head gasket. See it there are bubbles in the radiator with rad cap off and idling. If yes then head crack or blown head gasket. If no then I would look at the intake gasket.
