Thanks Mark, I looked at a lot of your information on the dieselstop and you have helped a lot of folks understand some important stuff, I appreciate it. I believe you had a ford v10 with a Sunnybrook 3310 at one point, I have the same rig and have enjoyed my 2002 van and the Sunnybrook for 8 years now and no problems.
It looks like I won't buy this 05 van, I wish there was an aftermarket tuner that could actually get that tranny to lock in 4th which would give me the same ratio as I have now. The ratio now in 3rd lockup with the 4.10 rear is about perfect for the 17,000lb GCWR and hasn't stressed anything that I am aware of beyond it limits.
Mine now will not pull overdrive consistently unless I am on flat ground and no wind and it really doesn't save me any fuel, I just have my foot in the gas pedal more which I don't think is good for the overdrive gear. the 1 to 1 ratio I think is the strongest gear in the tranny (3rd locked)
I guess I will wait and see if they put the new 6 speed tranny in the econoline with the v10, but I am not sure if that is going to happen.
Thanks again for your help
Andrew.

Don't give up on the van just because of the tranny. Like DKF said Mike at 5star can furnish a tune that when in TH the tranny won't shift into OD until after 75 mph. It came about because a member (me) on here was whining about it upshifting to OD when it really wasn't wanted. I and I think others will atest to the fact that it is a big improvement when towing heavy.

X2 dont give up... I refer to this tune as the MadMax tow tune..
It does well with heavy loads by keeping a lock in 4th and not shifting to 5th until a certain mph or not at all.
I also think there are more people wanting more gear control when towing, hint the new 6 speed coming with "Select a Shift mode"... Good job Ford!!!

I am comforted now. I will go and look at this van tomorrow and I did call Mike and thanks for the info. I noticed they lowered the GCWR on the 2005 vans with the 4.10 rear end from 18,500lbs to 17,700. I hope this wasn't because of the transmission, but maybe it was because of the way it was unable to lock in 4th. I believe it should be a great deal, I will let you know when I get it home Mike.

The 5R110 Torqshift is a stout trans. Guys with the 6.4l diesel/Torqshift combo are putting over 500hp and 1000lb ft of torque through it in stock form with just tuning. The 5R110 is in the F-450 and F-550 with a max GCWR of 32k lbs so I don't think the trans is hurting your GCWR. You should like the van and the trans.

Post up some pics when you get it.

Me likey the MadMax tune. Much better driving experience than stock. The extra grunt from Mikes tune doesn't hurt either.

hey guys, I drove to Arkansas today and picked up my E350 extended V10 van. 2005 model with a genuine 35,000 miles on it. I got to change the air filter for the first time and it wasn't that bad, just the right timing for a tranny service and it runs like a champ. Driving home I could tell that the 5R100 is a beefier transmission and in normal mode I prefer the way it behaves to the 4R100 in my other V10. I am excited about getting a trans and performance set up from Mike and will call him tomorrow. I have to find the PCM on this thing. I did read that there was part of the PCM behind the air filter but not sure if its just a junction box there. Any input would be appreciated so I can get those numbers and get things rolling.
thanks for the help guys

Andrew. Oh I got the van for $14,900 bucks and its been in Russelville AR all its life, no rust and is like new. A very good deal after much research considering that the 2010 van the same XLT is $35,500 and thats with rubber flooring. I found an 09 for $33,500 and that was with a slightly higher rebate being an 09. Ford is only offering $1,000 rebates on these vans and it is hard to find a V10.
Then all the used ones I saw out there had lots of miles on them and I almost gave up looking and decided to keep my old one, which I will do anyway, but got on Auto trader the other night and this one came up. Brake pads were all origional and almost no wear on the rotors, the tranny fluid looked and smelled great, It has all the origional Hancook tires on it and they are 3/4 worn out like they should be with that mileage on it and they are all evenly worn, so I got pretty convinced that the mileage is origional.
I keep my vehicles a long time and am looking forward to trying to wear this one out.
Andrew.

Congrats on the van. I think vans are really cool but I just don't think I could do without a truck.

I would love to drive a V10 4x4 van for one hunting season to see how I like it. I bet I would keep it!

I used mine to tow my Sunnybrook 3310 and it has a big storage area in the back. I put my 10'6" Quicksilver Inflatible boat and the 15 horse Mercury in there, my motorcycle goes in the van, and I can get two in there real easy, the Suzuki Bandit and my DR650 Motard dual sport, and then I go pllay. The van is a great weapon.
