So I followed the directions from Mark Kovalsky, and did a flush and fill on my '97 F-250HD. Thought I'd share the results.
That's the old fluid draining into a bucket. It was damn near black. When I checked the dipstick beforehand, it had the color of well used motor oil. Still smelled like ATF though, and not burnt, which I thought was kind of interesting.
After filling with new ATF, the truck shifts just like it did before; that is to say, it's fine. Goes through all four gears, holds overdrive without an issue, no slipping. From the color of the old ATF, I wonder if it was original? Truck has 273k on it. In any case I think it was overdue.
That is the same color as the fluid that came out of our 90 F150 302 E4OD. It has 184K miles but it had signs of being changed before.
I had the same experience holds OD just as good as before, no slips, and goes through all 4 gears. It was little better of shifts but still about the same.
You are lucky though when we drained it out of our 90 it had a little metal in it.
Trav
my new to me little car had trans fluid about like that too.i had thought i just made a mistake and removed the oil drain plug instead of the transaxles.luckily once it was drained,i could see a little bit of red shine to it still in the sunlight lol! amazing how bad some people are about maintenance.
i drained the fluid out of the 4r100 in my van before I tore it all out. 145k miles on original fluid....I called the guy I got the van from and asked him if he'd ever changed it. "never smelt (yes I said smelt) burnt" he said. . . . .
never woulda guessed the way it shifted, all seemed normal. looked like that there in your pic. criminal if ya ask me. on the other hand, pretty impressive a trans will function fine and last long despite being 5x over the 30k mile change interval.
