Well, I am starting over here the old one was getting kind of strung out. On a balanced 460 with d3ve heads with 2.19" intake valves, 1.710" exhaust valves, comp 1.7 ratio roller rockers, a .030 line bored block, and some seriously ported out heads, and pn 924-16 valve springs, a performer rpm intake, 1407 carb, guide plates, and pn 7651-16 pushrod set what pistons and cam would be good combination to get to a 500 horsepower or more figure at 6000 ft above sea level?
Ok where do I find one and what is a good choice, like a 514 or something? what rods do I need? Why can't I use the 460 crank? Reason I ask is I already have a lot of $$$ in it with grinding it, balancing it, and so on.
Lots of companies make them, just do a Google search. Find a kit that will suit your needs. Your engine builder should have insisted you stroke it because he knew what you wanted. I wouldn't bother with a 514, go bigger & get a kit that is already balanced.
Good deal. I would like to stay cost conservative this time. The last build cost a lot for what I ended up with, but if I can reuse the same heads, crank and rods then I can do a build for the cost of a balance, a set of pistons and rings, gaskets, and cam. I think I will have to do valvesprings, too. I would work on this build, but I hate to waste any more time and money since it is never going to be what I want since it has stocker pistons and the wrong cam. I think I want atleast 400 hp. I guess 500 is a little out of reach at my altitude with what I have to work with. The truck is a 1978 f-250 4x4. It is a 4 wheeling truck, hunting truck, farm truck, and if I get a good engine built up it will definitely see a few mud runs. I have a performer rpm intake and I will get some good headers. The guy that did the exhaust did kind of a bad job and it leaks a lot, so that will need redone anyway for the headers. I will keep looking around for more advice on the build. I drove the truck a few hundred miles yesterday and it seems to be running fine other than a mysterious coolant leak I can't spot and an oil leak out of the oil cooler line. I think the front of the tranny or the rear main are leaking down the back of the engine, The oil doesn't have much odor that I can smell so I think it is the rear main, so there is another problem that the builder left for me to correct. Is there a place I can find in writing that those h582p pistons are not high compression with a d3 head that I can take to the machinist?
