408 build parts look over
Im building a 408 out my 89 block 351W for my 48 ****** pickup that i use for wheeling mostly. I want an engine that has some decent power but is still nice for playing around on the trails. Just need some extra power to clean out those big 44 boggers. I have a parts list of what im going to do but would want some help looking over it before i fork out the cash sense this is the first horse power build i have done. I want to run on pump gas too.
Block is going to get bored over .030 or maybe more if needed (hope it doesn't)
Crank will be scat 408 balanced to .28oz with harmonic balancer and flex plate on when balanced, Forged dish top pistons with 10.1 compression.
Heads are pro action cast iron with 215cc intake volume, combustion camber of 64, intake valve 2.080, exhaust valve 1.600, will be running stock rocker arms and pushrods
Racing Head Service (RHS) 35303-01 - RHS Pro Action Small Block Ford Cylinder Heads - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Cam shaft Hawards cams, basic operating range 2,000-6000, advertised Intake duration 280, advertised exhaust duration 280, intake lift .512, exhaust lift .512
Howards Cams 220001-10 - Howards Cams Max Torque Camshafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Intake will be Edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake manifold
Edelbrock 7581 - Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap Intake Manifolds - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Carb will be holley truck avenger 770 (these seem to have alot less issues then the 670)
Distributor. Proform parts street/strip HEI
Proform Parts 66983B - Proform Street/Strip HEI Distributors - Overview - SummitRacing.com
I have a c6 and plan getting a new torque converter with a 2400 stall.
The headers im using are advanced adapters headers that are more like manifolds that are made with 2 1/2 tubing

i think you have to large of heads. an AFR 185 would work with 205's being tops. the 2500 stall is going to hurt you wheeling. that motor is going to be a torque monster so no need to have it reved so hi before the power gets to the ground ya know what i mean. contact the guys at Level 10 or monster to get their input on a tranny build/convert fit for you. that also looks like a real lumpy cam. lumpy doesnt make power. I would look into a custom ground cam to compliment the rest of the build.

It has dana 60 front with cv's and ford 10.25 rear. The gears in the axles are 4.11 but i have a bw 1356 hooked up to a np 205 via a custom adapter i built so gearing isn't an issue. So for the cam i wanna bring it down some? i picked that one because i figured it was ment for a 351 and with the bigger displacement of the 408 it would be more in the rpm range i was looking for. I want power from 1500 to 5500. Good to know about the heads so more isnt better there i take it. Also good to know about the torque converter. I have built everything on that truck myself but never have gone into the aftermarket motor stuff in the gas area. Built some diesel motors to some good numbers but those are easy to do.

stock rockers and push rods....come on build it right... look around the web there are all kinds of proven 408 builds.. that cam might be just right in a 408 call Howards and ask them, great company if you wipe out a lobe on brake in they will replace the cam 1/2 price.. no other company will do that... they make great stuff and all right here in the USA

You missed the target then, your combo is better suited to a dragster than a rock crawler. I'm also gonna suggest smaller heads with somewhere around 180cc ports(RHS or Dart irons, TFS or AFR aluminums) and a milder cam that looks something like the Comp 35-238-3, if that combo doesn't make close to 500TQ and 400hp something is wrong, you'll need an appropriate intake a carb of course.. probably something like the RPM airgap and a 750cfm 4bbl.
