"Wikia dick: is often riff with errors because of the morons adding incorrect info. A 1971 motor may have still been a 10.5 To 1 compression motor and would have made 365 (not 360) hp at 4600 and 500 ft/lbs @ 2800. But any motor after that (1972 and on) would have been a low compression, detune and cam retarded gutless posser compared to the early motors.

I have a "MOTOR" auto repair manual and it lists the 1975 460 4 Barrel as having 8.0 compression, 216 HP @ 4000 rpm and 366 ft lbs at 2600 rpm

My '78 came with a whopping 197hp 460.
I thought I've seen torque at 358 or 385 for that engine though, so the 360 number seems right on. (I can't document any of this!)
The police interceptor 460s were rated around 220hp in those days, so you really have to go back to the high compression/gross horsepower days to find a 460 rated at 365 hp.
Incidentally, dual exhaust bumped the performance on my '78 considerably, and with all the torque you never really miss the horsepower unless you're bench racing.

I knew about wiki being a little less than accurate at times and the hi/lo comp. motors. A four door marquis came up for sale a couple hours away needing much work and pics are not available, just trying to educate myself on this vehicle. thanks for all reply's and gpfarrel when ever you get around to it could you measure your dash from end to end for me ? I am curious on the width, thank you.Jim

The 460 was an option in the Mercury Marquis/Grand Marquis untill 1978 and I drive one. These are the best cars ever made. They dwarf all newer cars in size and completly out class them in reliability and comfort. The way they rated engines in the early 70s and earlier was completly overinflated. The most powerfull factory 460s are from the 90s fuel injected trucks. The F-450 also called F-superduty I think have a slightly higher torque rating.

I once put a tailgate from a 78 F150 in the trunk of my Marquis and the whole entire tailgate fit into the trunk. They were truly cars from a different era.
If you end up with the Oaky car and it happens to have real nice chrome, look me up!
