What does the block heater heat?

I plugged my Ex in overnight for the first time this year and noted that when I started it this morning, the engine oil temp was at 90F (only got down to +8F last night).

Question is: What is heated by the block heater? Oil in the pan? any fuel lines? just a general heating of everything?

Jim

Typically it heats the coolant, which in turn transfers heat to everything else.

Jim
If you have nothing but the factory block heater, it will heat your coolant, which will keep the block warmer, but 90 degree oil temps seems a little high. If you're not the original owner, your PO might have installed a pan heater too, which attaches to the bottom of the oil pan, and will heat your engine oil as well. Up here, mainly in the interior, where it gets really cold, people will install oil pan heaters and heated battery blankets in addition to the block heater (that's what we do with trucks on the North Slope). For most locations, a block heater is sufficient.

Thanks, Husky. I put a Webasto coolant heating system on my 60 Series Detroit in the Freightliner to complement the block heater (it gets cold in the Wyoming gas fields, too) and am considering one for the Excursion for when I don't have an electric connection. Jim
