Need quick answer re: brake calipers

I redid the entire front end on the Ex a few months back. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a slight knocking coming from underneath somewhere. I finally crawled under there and the only thing that seemed remotely 'loose' was both of the front brake calipers. The two mounting bolts on each of the front calipers are tight but both of the actual calipers is 'loose'. I can grab the caliper and move it a very slight bit. I redid the brakes along with the front end including new pads and pins. I remember when I ordered the new pins, I tried to get the 'updated' ones that I found on guzzle's site. The Ford guy I got the parts from said that those parts didn't exist so he gave me the standard ones. I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure I matched the new pins to the old ones before swapping them out.

Could I have the wrong pins?

What else could allow the caliper to 'move' even though the bolts are tight?

It's not supposed to do that is it?

Thanks for the help!

p.s. I'll post this over on the superduty forum also...

Should NOT move if tight.

Should be easy to find. It can only either be the caliper mouting bracket not all the tight or it's the caliper pin.

Look to see if the mounting bracket is moving or is it just the caliper moving.

Actually, I have the same exact issue. The caliper bolts are tight but it's the caliper itself that moves on the pins. I wonder if that is the culprit to the shaking syndrome. Does this necessitate the exchange of the pin, the caliper, or both? Sorry for thread jacking.

Not thread jacking cause it's probably the same problem.

Moves more than just in and out on the pin?

A little clarification...

O.P. here, I understand that the caliper should 'slide' in and out a bit on the pin. This is more like a 'wiggle'. Thinking about it now, it's almost as if the diameter of the pin is just a bit small for the hole in the caliper which is allowing the caliper to 'wiggle' on the pins. I may have just explained my problem, but the pins are new OEM. I guess they could be the wrong ones.

Double check your caliper pins, but you are right that the calipers should slide or float. They should be a little loose. Are they moving along the axis of the pins or up and down. I am trying to remember the set up. Is the caliper mounting bracket tight? It has a very high torque.

I wouldn't order any thing from that guy again. They are available and have been used by many.
You should not get any wiggle, just the movement in and out Check the torque on the pin bolts. Should be 135 ft lbs.

No-no-no!!! Caliper mounting brackets get that kind of torque, but pin bolts are much lower than that. I'm away from my manual, but 42 even seems high. I was thinking like 35 ft/lbs.

WOOPS, me bad.http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...s2/mad0228.gif

Yes the caliper mounting bolts are that. The Pin bolts are 42 ft/lbs for the front up to 2004 in the haynes manual. The 05 are listed as 56 ft/lbs and the rears on all are 27 ft/lbs.
