From what I recall the gasket has to match the front cover. So if you swap everything from your 01 engine, use the gasket from that engine. It should be the one with the metal screen in it.
If you are building over everything on literally just a short block, it should rebuild exactly the same.
In my case I threw in a 97 Longblock and thus had to do a ton of part swapping.
In you case just move everything you already have over. Its truly simple if you take your time as you tear it apart. I couldn't believe it.
This is my plan as my motor only had 200,000KMS on it. I am "Planning" on building a complete shortblock from one of the motors I am picking up, and moving my heads and EVERYTHING else onto the block with rods/pistons/crank.
The machine shop said that they recommend NOT pulling the frost plugs as the new ones don't always fit correctly. Any comments on this?

Thanks,
Frost plug? I believe that is what we call a freeze plug but I could be wrong. I would say that it isn't worth worrying about. They can be a huge pain in the *** to deal with and there isn't a sense in fixing what isn't yet broken!

Ya the only problem is that usually when you have the block hot tanked, it takes out the Cam Bearings and the Frost plugs.
I'll have to see weather I end up using my block or one of the two that I have arranged to pick up.
Like any engine rebuild, if you hot tank the block, it has to be bare including freeze plugs and all bearings. Double check your heads also. If you did some carnage to the rods and pistons in your older engine, make sure no pieces came up and kissed the valves or combustion chambers. Just a precaution. I would also change out the glowplugs and check all wiring harnesses for wear as well. This has been an informative thread. Good luck and post up pics and updates!
ok so i did the same swap with my 2001. i left the single shot injectors in it with the 2001 computer. now how do i change the computer to get all of this to play together? I can't find any place that has some kind of chip to swap in to the 2001 computer to control the single shots. HELP!!!

Hummmm I would hope you did not leave the little AA injectors and 15* hpop in the motor. That would be a huge step back.
All you need to run single shot injectors is a chip. Thats easy. But you dont want AA injectors in a superduty.
97 engines seem to be correlated to staying together at very high horsepower. Not that you'll ever get there but Marty is around 800 hp on nitrous based on trap speeds, and is putting in injectors right now that should put him into the 10's, (~950hp) at least for one pass, on a stock bottom end. Just head studs push rods and valve springs. mmmmmmmm
So mean the 97 engines are stronger than the 99-00 engines? Iam thinking of doing the same swap? Who's Marty?

Yes, all is done and running solid. (FINALLY). All the problems I experienced were stupid things like frost plugs that werent installed correctly from the Machine Shop & A crack in the oil plan I used... But looks like its all good now... I have about 1200miles on it so far and I am VERY happy.

How much hp are you getting with the setup you have listed?
