97 engines seem to be correlated to staying together at very high horsepower. Not that you'll ever get there but Marty is around 800 hp on nitrous based on trap speeds, and is putting in injectors right now that should put him into the 10's, (~950hp) at least for one pass, on a stock bottom end. Just head studs push rods and valve springs. mmmmmmmm
Just found 2 short blocks (one has heads that come with it). $400 for both. 95 & 97. Both have good rods, crank, and pistons. (not that i need the pistons). Great news!
You don't need the pistons? What ones are you putting in? I'd have someone professional build it if i were you. Believe me, doing it yourself and making mistakes gets expen$ive.

I'm following that thread over there, Kris. Should be interesting.....

Well, it will be likely that I will have to bore the block that I end up using, so I will require .010, .020, or .030 over pistons depending on what the block needs.
I am comfortable with assembly, I have put together at least a dozen motors in my life. This will just be my first Diesel. Thanks for the advise though. If I come accross anything that is not clear, I will ask someone who knows...
Hey, I just got home and read your PM. I am working the next couple of days but I am sure at some point I can sit down and get in touch with you and look over any thoughts you have.
Most of the correct things have already been mentioned but here is the most important thing that wasn't quite pointed out to me.
If you use a 97 block, use the 97 style gasket on the HPOP reservoir or the truck will likely crack the front cover and you will have to pull the engine out again. Trust me, I found this out the tough way.
Here was a general thread that I got going. It sounds like you already know what you are doing so the first thread may not be helpful.

From what I recall the gasket has to match the front cover. So if you swap everything from your 01 engine, use the gasket from that engine. It should be the one with the metal screen in it.
If you are building over everything on literally just a short block, it should rebuild exactly the same.
In my case I threw in a 97 Longblock and thus had to do a ton of part swapping.
In you case just move everything you already have over. Its truly simple if you take your time as you tear it apart. I couldn't believe it.
