97-01 short blocks Interchangeable?

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone knows if I can get my hands on a 1997 shortblock, rebuild it, can I slap my heads & everything else (2001) on it?

are the 1997 motors forged? Any other information about interchanging parts would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2001 7.3 with a rod hanging out the side... Need to hunt down something to rebuild in its place.

Thanks,

yep know of a guy doin it right now. just have to swap the front cover and everything over. alot of little stuff like the cam on a 97 has a fuel lobe on it and you'd have to put a cap in the hole in mid valley

Interesting. I wonder if its worth doing it this way? Anyone know what it costs to have rods peened / cryo'd?

I'm not sure what I am going to find when I pull mine apart, but I got a hole in the pan on the drivers side, and something from the passenger side hit the solenoid on the starter.

I figured that... But, I am wondering what will be re-usable and what won't. I don't want to start ordering parts until I get that thing apart.

94-03 block

i put a 97 powerstroke in my 2000, big differences are as follows.
1. hpop-swap your 17 deg unit into it,
2. fuel bowl-the old style fuel bowl is diferent than the newer one.
3. you have to remove the fuel pump from the valley, you can then plug the hole left by it with a 3/4 inch freexe plug sealed with anarobic sealer or RTV.
4. fuel lines are different
5. exhaust manifolds and up pipes-the manifolds are different for the newer trucks, when you take em off go have them planed at a local machine shop then coat seal surface with good axle grease and torque em down no gaskets needed!
6 engine mounts, use your trucks mounts
7 INJECTORS as far as I know the older trucks used single shot injectors you can use a custom tune for better power or swap in those infernal split shots if you like them.

I have had no issues with my MOTOR in the last 5000 since i put it in, i did howeve chew up my TC so it obviously worked lol good luck and PM me if you need any in depth advice.

oh and one more thing the manifolds may be different too, quick word of advice, the front bolt that looks like you cant get it out without taking off the front cover? the manifold is slotted! that was one of my learning experiences

I'd love to chat in person if you have time. Maybe you would be willing to PM your phone# and I can call?

I am thinking of just the short block. Put my heads, Manifolds, and everything on the 97 block. Basically want to rebuild the 97 rods/crank/pistons and slam it into mine... so I suspect the uppipes, manifolds etc... will be fine?
I plan on using my injectors as well (of course). So I want to have the rods Peaned and cryo'd if that is the right thing to do. I think my only next option would be to spend HUGE $$$ on some aftermarket rods...

The whole intake system is different. But the parts you need will bolt right up to it to make it a "late" engine. Put all your parts on it as Miles said...

EDIT: I don't think the heads are different. But you certainly have the option to pull them and make sure you have a good seal there. No better time to do it, and I'd probably do it too.

Thanks everyone! You guys are great! Last question tonight... Does anyone have a link to something that tells you what order to take things out? would it help to take the fenders off? Do I need to de-charge my A/C and get the coil out of the way? Etc... Etc...

What things need to come out of the way for me to get the motor out?

Don't worry about the fenders...

Bumper
Grille
Header panel with headlights
Place AC condensor on the passenger side of the truck
Front top crossmember
Intercooler and tubes
tranny cooler
Radiator

Then start disconnecting everything off the motor,
Main engine harness plug
AC off the motor (place to the side)
There are some grounds that need to come off
Unbolt your torque converter
Pull turbo
Strap a chain to it and unbolt the motor and drag it out...

I am sure there is alot more.... but it will get you going...

Then swap everything over to the 97 motor... Make sure you change out the front cover!!!
