my buddy's '09 F150 4.6L v8 is pretty simple. popped the hood on it the other day and was rather surprised. i'm not a fan of the modular engines, but it was more simple than i thought it would be. i think i could work on it fairly easily.
Thats good to hear. I actually have never even seen a 4.6 under a hood in a truck, (except in a mustang). I hate the 5.4 that is shoehorned into our expedition, although it has hardly needed any work in a 190k, even the auto still is working just fine.
Why must auto transmissions be so freakin messy? They just suck... I hate working on them because there's no way to do it without getting soaked in ATF!
Last time I buy a truck with a Auto if I can help it... that's for sure!
Just brings back bad memories of working on the C6 in my '75 F150 in a gravel driveway. THAT was awesome...
Eh, you only get REALLY messy one time, if you put in a drain plug or better yest a pan with a drain plug and cooling fins or tubes, it's not too bad at all...

The 4.6 and 5.4 are exactly the same size. Same dimensions, same pistons... the 5.4 just has a longer stroke.
The Triton V10 is just a 5.4 with two extra cylinders. Same pistons as the 4.6 and 5.4 as well.
Overall the modular V8 motor is the same size as a 460.

huh.. I never knew that. That is kinda smart on Fords part, even though I hate the size of them. I love my small block Fords though. I have built and played with several of them over the years, and just flat out love them. I have a 66 mustang that I built a 332 stroker motor for. I love it. I have never had it dynoed, but the motor I built it after had 505hp and 435tq. I have a slightly larger cam and carb. I beat the crap out of it and it just keeps on screamen.

Actually you are incorrect on the 5.4 and the 4.6 being the same size.... the 5.4 is actually about three inches wider, caused by the taller deck hieght of the block.
the 5.4 has a centerline of crank to the top of the piston of 10.079"
a 4.6 has a centerline of the crank to the top of the piston of 8.937"
If you calclutate the angles and everything the 5.4 is about 3 inches wider and about an inch and half taller than the 4.6.
It is true how ever that the 4.6 and 5.4 are the same bore... Infact the 5.4 although is a decent engine ours has been worry free 157K miles (other than the clearance issue Ford had with the 5.4s the first two years. They ended up putting too much clearance piston, so it has piston slap when it is first started in the morning it knocks, but once its warmed up they are fine... has done this from day one.... Hell even the e40D is running just fine...) The stroke to bore ratio in the 5.4 is very large... hell even in a 4.6 it is large... this is why when you see the power numbers of a 5.4 versus a 4.6, its very similar. The 2V head is what capped off the power on both of the engines.... now with the 4V and the 3Vs, they have cured alot of that... I have never dug into a 3V or a 4V, but I have built 4-5 4.6s and a few 5.4 builds.
I can tell you more about a modular motor than you would EVER want to know.... There is a reason why I have a SBF in my car too...
