Why must auto transmissions be so freakin messy? They just suck... I hate working on them because there's no way to do it without getting soaked in ATF!
Last time I buy a truck with a Auto if I can help it... that's for sure!
Just brings back bad memories of working on the C6 in my '75 F150 in a gravel driveway. THAT was awesome...
AMEN, I wish mine was stick, would have been much better, but sticks are hard to find, specially in trucks. But auto's they are so finicky it seems, so messy, bunch of stuff that can go wrong.
you can get bolt on drain plugs at most parts stores. you just locate and drill a hole and bolt it through the pan. it is like a 1/2 inch bolt and nut and than has a 1/4 inch hole drilled through it and a plug. It only takes a couple minutes to install when the pan is down for servicing. I put one on my suburban 250,000 miles ago and haven't had any problems with it.
Helifixer, as I was reading Brownies rant, that was the first thing that came to mind. I installed my first one on a C4. After that, all of the auto tranny's I owned got one.
i sure do like my ZF5!!!! no need to rebuild just becuase i got a chip and injectors or a turbo.. haha. just a clutch!!
i have seen those drain plugs. would be a good thing to do for sure. i thankfully don't have any auto trucks to mess with so i don't need to worry about this. hahaha
I cant stand automatic's. I never owned and auto car or truck in my whole life thats counting over 15 cars and trucks,Manual just makes u feel in control, I wont have to worry abt ford not making them anymore till another 15 years when ill be in the market for a 2011 truck!
Yeah, manuals have there problems too. Mine grinds downshifting into third and 2nd, and grinds up-shifting if you shift to fast. One of these days when I have some time, I will tear it out and get it all fixed up.
yeah but my manual has 299,000 miles on it now and hasn't been rebuilt. hahaha. it will need it soon though. its starting to grind every now and then going into 3rd quickly. at that time i will be dropping some major coin on my ZF5 i'm thinkin for stronger shafts.
I think thats a common problem in ford manuals both my f350 and 450 have syncro problems in 1st and 2nd gear but mine are dump trucks so there taking a beating, I just live with the grinding or i just gotta find the right rpm so it dont grind.
How about my buddies Tacoma, its a closed system so you cant even check the level, pathetic I am impressed how simple his truck is under the hood. You pop the hood of any American new truck, its a disaster. His Tacoma was still pretty simple. You could actually see the engine still .

my buddy's '09 F150 4.6L v8 is pretty simple. popped the hood on it the other day and was rather surprised. i'm not a fan of the modular engines, but it was more simple than i thought it would be. i think i could work on it fairly easily.
