Exhaust hanger rubber source...

Y'know how a lot of those "universal" exhaust hangers they sell at the parts store are basically just pieces of truck tire sidewall with some holes drilled in them and a metal piece riveted to the end?

Does anybody know of someplace you could buy just those rubber pieces with the holes in them? They are really handy for making up custom hangers but I usually don't need or want them with the metal piece on the end.

I know what you mean. All it is is small pieces of rubber conveyor belting. Probably acres of it lying around farms and quarries.

Not usually thick enough. unless you can find one of heavy equipment.

Lazy K has it right. See if you can find a factory that uses conveyor belts. 1 belt will last you and all your friends a life time. Basically some of the ones I haev seen when strecthed out where 100+ft long and as wide as 24" figure out how many hangers that would make.

Edit to add: look around and see if you can find a farm machinary junk yard that will let you in. Some farm equipment like some of the combines, etc use a wide drive belt in places that might work for you. Can't give you exact makes and models but I know I have seen enough of them to know they are around.

Baler belts would be a little thinner than the exhaust hangers but works well. I had some, but when my father's shop burned down, it was in it...

How about visiting a tire shop that deals with truck tires and asking for an old tire?

A friend and I also have made these hangers, he has half an old tire we use for raw material.

Old tire and a hacksaw. A little "elbow grease" applied and you can make a bunch.

Uh, how about a sawz-all instead of the hacksaw?

Be easier with a body saw, jigsaw, or snips.

I'm not sure how easy a tire would be to cut up with anything. Sawzall might actually be the best thing.

Anyway- sad thing is I work at a company that does lots of business with coal mines, but I have no idea where I could get used belting from. I've heard that stuff has a hundred uses, so I'd like to get my hands on some.

Conveyor Belting, Plastics, Urethane & Rubber Industrial Solutions

They supply NEW belting to mines and such (I hauled a big roll of belting from their Dallas facility to a Montana coal mine).

While NEW belting would probably be prohibitively expensive, I'd be willing to bet they'd sell you some manufacturing scrap.

If you need some belting pieces, I have some of that. I don't think it would work for exhaust hangers though, since it's fairly thin.
I also have an old tractor tire, but shipping might be a killer since it's about 6' tall.
