I might have a place to rebuild mine. If not, I stopped into Napa and their replacement is a 135amp, Ford's is a 110amp for the same cost. Both are reman so it would probably be better to go with the higher output expecially since I pull a fifth. I would think the extra output would help with the draw from the lights and brakes. This is just what I am thinking and appreciate any input. Anyone using a Napa reman alternator?

I posted in another thread a couple days ago that the napa alternator I put on the Ex lasted 3 months,it has a oem on it now.I have a dixie on the 350 and no troubles with that one yet.
I don't think the extra amps means much, at least not just based on towing a 5'r.
If you insist on a reman/rebuilt, I would buy based on the warranty. And I'm thinking that getting a warranty replacement over the Ford parts counter would be a PITA. On the other hand, I don't think your odds are any better with a NAPA than an Autozone, Checkers, O'Reilly, whatever. They all come from the same local rebuilders near the store.

One difference is that the AutoZones come with a lifetime warranty and they are everywhere. I am not saying they are or aren't the best but if you plan on keeping your truck I think it's worth the crapshoot.
I can agree with that. I happen to know the owner of a alternator/starter/smog pump rebuilder. He rebuilds for all the local chain stores, and they are all the exact same thing. They literally spent a few minutes per unit, not counting the hot tank cleaning, and don't replace anything that is not obviously bad, and in most of them it's just a regulator. Remans from the chain stores is a total crap shoot, but if you exchange enough of them you may eventually get one that will last.
Personally, I want my truck to be reliable. That's why I've tried to steer the OP away from a reman. I would gladly pay double for a NEW unit.
I am going to assume that they also polish the slip rings and install new bearings since I have never had a reman. fail in those areas the 1st couple of years.

They inspect the armature, and turn it if it is needed. I'm not positive on bearings, since they can't be inspected. They probably replace those on all of them.
He is a good guy, and our sons were in Scouts together. He is just doing what the industry considers standard practice. But knowing what I know, even though he would sell me all the alternators I want at his cost, I don't buy them from him. And if you want to hear him laugh real hard, just ask about the lifetime warranties. The only difference between a 90 day warranty unit, and a lifetime warranty unit, is how much you pay for it.
I have not found new units yet. Ford sales reman units the same as everyone else. I thought I would be getting a new one but after checking they would be reman. Can you recommend a place to get new? I don't mind paying a little more either for reliability. Have you guys ever heard of Alternator Pros-Full Line of Alternators for Cars and Trucks Just found them but worried about getting what you pay for.
You probably won't find one in stock, they will have to order it. I've been offered them at the parts store before. But it's been so long since I had to replace one that I'm not sure any more. I gave you a link above for Y2K Ford. Email Ed and ask him which of his are new versus reman.
Just got another alt. early this year from autozone for the mustang in my sig. The last one they replaced was in 95 and the 1st one I bought was in 81 when they were chief auto. Still no charge and no questions asked. It was in there computer system still.
