Today I noticed a banging sound coming from under the truck. I got home and climbed under the truck and had my dad jump up and down on the bumper. I noticede the transfer case moving excessivly. I got a closer inspection and noticed that the skid plate was hitting the t-case. Visual inspection on the mounts appear to be good. Any thoughts on why this just started?
I plan on using a floor jack to put pressure on each mount to see if one is busted. I do not know how it busted all the sudden but I hope it is the tranny mount because the engine mounts do not look like any fun to change.
Well I cannot seem to be able to tell what mount it is. I plan on replacing the tranny mount as it is the easiest. Does anyone know where I can get one or does the stealership have a monopoly on this one???
OK I guess we all miss things every now and then. While trying to diagnose this issue I went down to check out my uncles mounts to see if there were any differences. Upon doing this I noticed his skid plate was different. I came back home and looked at mine and saw that the skid plate was the same but in a different direction. I said Huh, took it off and flipped it around and walaw no more contact. Apparently 2 years ago when I put my exhaust on I had taken the skid plate loose and put it on backwards. It has just taken this long for there to be enough wear on the plate to actually make the t-case clunk into it. So with that ID10T error out of the way problem solved. thank god no mounts needed replaced.
ID-10-T errors are sometimes the easiest (and hardest) to fix. I myself am an expert at fixing such errors. Glad you found the problem before tearing into it.
Well that was a problem but I still have the banging after a test drive. It sounded like it was coming from the front passenger side. I jacked up the passenger side front and spun the tire and there was a clicking noise coming from the tire. As I was turning it I layed on the ground and watched the ujoints on the front axle and they were twitching like the teeth in the hub were not disengaging all the way. I removed the locking hub (that was a pita) and say a dry hubb assymbly. I then spun the tire with no hub and noise gone. I could shake the hub and it made a pretty loud banging. I am going to the dealer tomorrow to pick up another hub and we will see if that solves the problem.
250 bucks for a hub and the banging is still there. I am about to take this truck on a long drive down a short road that dead ends into the water. It was a similar sound as to when my sway bar links were blown just a couple of months ago and I replaced them. I have wiggled, jiggled, jerked, poked, and prodded everthing under the front end and I have nothing. I need a second set of hands to help me so I am going to look for some help that is not at work.
OK got a buddy over here and we found that it was a loose sway bar link. I had changed them a month or 2 ago and apparently one of them worked there way back loose. Problem solved. Thanks for all the help.
