Registration and Smog Testing.

Ok, its time to register my truck again and I get the joy of smog testing again. (Do they make us smog our trucks every year out here?)

I know it passed smog last year - I bought it off the guy after passing the smog test.

But I don't want to blow the money at the smog testing station and find out it failed, likely by a lot.

Any suggestions for a place to go to get it checked out before I take it in for testing?

Its a 78 F150, 400 and scares my neighbors when I start it - think it still has the factory exhaust..!

Also I'm in south Phoenix, so somewhere not on the other side of the valley would be nice.

Thanks in advance,
Mike...

there is supposed to be one some where around Skyhorbor airport that is never busy and from what I have been told kinda relaxed. I never took anything there but knew some people who did. don't know the exact location though.
as for testing I have no idea Yavapai County doesn't require it.

I know where my local testing center is.

I just dont want to go there, have them charge me for the test then find out it failed.

I much rather find a shop that can run the test and do the work to get it cleared up so I dont have to pay for the test more than once.

Funny thing is, the testing will cost more than the registration.

Thanks,
Mike...

Any idea what the mileage limit is?

I don't drive the truck that much anyways.

Really bought it for something to play around with (never had the chance to do anything with a truck) and needed something to do "truck stuff" with.

I bought the 4 door sedan to be the daily driver, and 3x the gas mileage. heheh

Thanks,
Mike...

Not sure exactly on the mileage..but I wanna say 10K per year and 25 yrs or older: Hagerty - Collector Car and Boat Insurance

Check the DMV Link... they break down the specifics as to what qualifies.
I heard about it from a co-worker...she has 3 Chevys and pays approx $400 per yr. So the pricing aint bad. Im looking into myself for my 78, 81.

Hope this helps.

Talked to my Insurance guy.. I can do it through them.. but then I cant do any actual "truck" stuff with it.

No real hauling of anything, towing or anything off road. Camping would be an issue!

Oh well, hopefully I pass smog easily!

...Yea, I thought there might be limitations...But, then again, as long as you dont file a claim while doing *truck Stuff*....

What I hear is that most Insarance Companies CAN provide it. I also hear that most Insurance companies provide it THRU Hagerty as the underwriter..plus a slight commision added of course.

Did you contact Hagerty directly to compare prices??

Good luck!

Most shops will tell you to go through the test first so if it does fail they know where the problem is. If you do fail the next test is free. A stock 400 should pass with no problems. I have a 79 F-150 with a built up 400 and pass each year.

Sorry for the delayed update - I got busy/distracted with visiting family, my bday and thanksgiving.

Finally took it in (late, $8 fine).

Didn't make any adjustments or anything, just made sure it was well warmed up.

Not only did it pass the smog test -only did a visual gas cap check and an Idle / Loaded Idle test - but it passed by A LOT.

I can post the numbers if anyones curious.

Amazing I say...
