toolbox

been wantin to put a road chest in the bed of my truck so everytime i need a wrench or ratchet to work on summin i ain't gotta get up in the bed and go diggin into my chest toolbox. i'm wantin to mount it on the back of the bed against the tailgate where i can just fold the tailgate down and start pullin drawers open. but i also still want to be able to use my gooseneck hitch with it mounted in there.

has anybody done this? any ideas on how i might go about it?
any suggestions of toolbox's for a fair price that could handle all of that?

i'd like to put a fairly large box back there cause i use sockets and ratchets from 1/4 inch drive up to 3/4 and sometimes one inch drive regularly. also wrenches as big as 2 in. so its gonna have to be big to hold all of that

Well at least you are not asking for too much.

How would you get the goose neck over the top of the tool box? That trailer would have to be really high to clear it.

Maybe I am just not thinking outside the box.

i've looked at mounting it long ways where the end of the toolbox is against the tailgate and the drawers would open to the other side of the bed. or building a frame that the box sat in and was bolted to then mounting the frame on a hinge bolted to the corner of the bed where when i wasn't using it the toolbox would be in the long ways position and when i opened the tailgate and undid the latch it could swing out where the drawers pull out towards the back of the truck.

i didn't know if anyone had done this before or not. i'm welcome to any thoughts, designs or comments.

i've considered putting a flat bed on it but i don't reckon it would look too awful swooft so that one is on the back burner

That is a cool idea to have it swing out. I will have to give that more thought.

if you come up with any ideas send em on. i got some ideas and rough sketches for it but i'd like to see some blue prints of those truck beds before i get too far with the design to figure out i cant do it.

i'm an animal science major at college. should've been engineering i've modified every piece of equipment we have on the farm and it works better than it did out of the factory. i guess pair that with my machinist certificate and i could come up with some wild stuff. knowledge wasted ohwell

How about a job box from TSC? $300 48"W x 24"W x 36"H.

You would have to put it in front of the GN, but the WD would be better up front anyway.

i know this is a lil out dated but i really miss the built tool box compartments found on the older trucks.

i was going to build something in the bed of my truck out of wood.
up in front by the cab it would be like a big chest.
And behind by the tailgate, i would install pull out drawers.

This would make it so my goosneck hitch doesnt' stick up above everything, so plywood, like my shearing board, goes in easily, and i dont ahve to worry about it flying out if i dont sit something on top of it.
Then i can keep stuff in the new built in storage.

The problem is. I cannot think of anything to put in the storage boxes unless i'm traveling.
