Thought I'd try this question here since it's for a F-150. I had posted it in the 'Aftermarket Products' section but didn't get any responses there. A fellow there had warned about older chest-type boxes not fitting due to the gas filler tube area extending into the bed of the tuck (in front of the wheel well). And I see on my 2011, that appears to be a potential problem (the two wheel wells are not the same on each side of the truck's bed).
So I'm wondering what toolbox manufacturers are making a chest-type box that fits a 2011 F-150 correctly? I'm obviously looking for something fairly secure. And what others preference: chrome or black color?
If you have a Tractor Supply Company store near by, they have a full line of boxes plus most stores will have some one there who knows. Their store brand line is made for the most part by DeeZee. Chris
If you go with a gull wing style that fits on top of the rails you'll be OK. I wrote the post about a standard full width tool chest not fitting without a lot of heavy hammering.
This one appears to be a style that could fit and still be a flush style... if you could get measurements off that style box you could tell for sure (my box looks the same on the front bottom but the sides on mine were straight all the way to the bottom instead of chamfered like this one)
Dixiedog1: yes sir, it was your posting that I found helpful. I'm not sure I would have thought to look that closely at the front of the wheel well areas inside the bed.
And yes, I was hoping to be able to keep the rails clear and also have a single lid/top that opens across the box. That's another reason your post caught my eye; you were describing the type box that sits down on the bed of the truck which is more the style I'm after.
I guess I need to go get some measurements so I'll at least have an idea of what will fit. That pic you attached looks like a good solution as long as the chamfered area comes up high enough to clear that gas tube filler hump (notch...whatever). When your posting caused me to take a hard look at it, I recall being a little surprised it was as high {tall} away from the bed floor as it is. It's no small, insignificant thing as you know from having to beat out an indenture for it, in your box!
Looks like the 'aftermarket' folks would have recovered from Ford's change by now. But so far, I haven't seen any that specifically state (or show) that hump being accounted for.
I just got a 48 inch tool chest for the front of my bed. I couldn't find one that was wedged on the side that would clear the fuel filler angle on my 5.5ft bed. I really wanted something wider than 48", but that is ok. Well, let me clarify that I'm sure there is one out there but I didn't see one in person to check the fit. The 48" works as there is 50" between the wheel wells. This the model and brand I bought, but not from the vendor in the link. (they were way high)
I don't quite know the exact style that you want but the company that I work for only buys Weather Shield tool boxes. They look great and hold up to being abused in our construction trucks every day. These boxes outlast the trucks!
...the company that I work for only buys Weather Shield tool boxes.
When I Google for "Weather Shield" tool boxes, I get 'Weather Guard' and 'Deflecta Shield' tool boxes. I don't seem to be able to find one called exactly "Weather Shield".
