starting problem when cold and bad idle
especially in the fall and in the winter, i have a starting problem, most i have to turn ignition on twice and then the truck starts good.
today in the morning, it did not work.
the engine stops again i had to start it with the throttle fully open, but i had no idle.
after about 15 minutes with runing engine with 1500/min, i had idle.
today, it was about 40 degrees.
has someone the same problem?
i did replace some month ago the upper intake manifold gasket and did order today a coolant temp sensor and the IAC
As has been asked, Is the CEL (Check Engine Light) lit????
If so, for sure there are trouble codes stored in the computer & they can provide helpful trouble shooting clues.
On your model/year Ranger, you'll need a code reader, or scantool to access the computers trouble codes from the under dash diagnostic connector.
In the USA most autoparts stores have scantools, or code readers & will scan the computer at no cost.
So maybe your auto parts stores offer a similiar service, or maybe you have an FTE chapter close by, or some auto club, or member, that has a code reader, or scantool that'll scan the OBD-2 computer for you, or you could order one on the internet, they aren't very expensive now days.
OK, back to your problems and symptoms & some of the things you've noticed & have done that worked & what they suggest is wrong.
Having to cycle the ignition switch on, two or more times in order to have the engine start, suggests a fuel delivery problem.
So check the fuel pressure at the under hood, on engine, fuel rail schrader valve.
It should be 64 +/- 8 psi. It should hold pressure after the ignition is wtiched off. The fuel pressure should drop 3-10 psi after the engine is started.
If the pressure is low, look to a clogged fuel filter, clogged in tank fuel pump sock/pre-filter, weak fuel pump, or faulty fuel pressure regulator.
The fuel pump & pressure regulator on your Ranger are one piece & located in the fuel tank & must be replaced as an assembly.
Having to open the throttle fully "WOT" on the start, suggests that the engine was flooded, with too much fuel, was that the problem????
If so, then that would suggest too much fuel pressure, leaking fuel injectors, or maybe a sprak problem, or air delivery/clogged air filter, or maybe an MAF sensor air metering problem.
SO, the problems with the engine not wanting to start & idle, could be a number of things, from a clogged air filter, bad vacuum leak, faulty IAC, or faulty or dirty MAF sensor, leaking fuel injectors, or fuel pressure or delivery problems.
So, any stored computer trouble codes could help diagnose those problems.
If you decide to clean your MAF sensor, be sure to read through the "Technical Information" thread atop this forum, on how to Safely clean the MAF sensor. You must be careful not to damage it & to use a non residulal solvent, that won't won't damage the sensor, nor leave any deposits after it dries, that would uncalibrate the sensors heated element.
There is also information on how to test the IAC in the Tech Info thread.
Also many other helpful threads there on maintenance & repair of your Ranger, so be sure to look through it.
The new IAC may help on the start & idle, but you may also have other problems, so keep us posted on the results of your trouble shoot & repairs.
More thoughts to ponder.
no the obd light was not on.
will let you know the results after the replacing of the iac and temp sensor.
guess its not a fuel delivery problem, because if so, i would have also troubles in the summer time with it.
the engine needs more gas to start in wintertime than in summertime, that means, that in summertime, it would be over floated.
it takes a week until i get the parts, will let you know next week about the result
will let you know how the truck is starting when it is cold
