Its been a while since Ive driven my truck "6 months". During the six months I would just start it and let it idle for abou 15 min. Well I went to drive it today And got it to about 35-40 mi per hr. And it started to vibrate in the rear end and it sounded really loud . How do I tell if I have bad berings or if my problem is in the rear end??? Please help
I would say you should do a rotation on your tires, move front to rear, and rear to front. this will halp to determine if the problem has anything to do with your tires, becouse after sitting a while a wieght could drop off and get kicked down the driveway. if you do the rotation and the vibration moves to the front, or the steering wheel then the problem is a tire, if the vibration dosn't move then it eliminates the tires as suspects. But I would lean towards the tires, for one thing the wieghts are only being held on by a very small metal clamp, and for another thing, the tires are the esiest to fix.
you can also put it up on jack stands, block or chain the truck down and have a friend put it in gear and run it up to speed that it did it at. You can SAFELY observe out back where you think the sound is coming from and maybe determine where or what it is. Sometimes weird sounds that you hear in the cab can be transfered through out the truck and sound like something else.
i would also say tires, after sitting for a while it could develop a flat spot. my tires on my old gmc would wobble the whole truck when i drove slow, took the tires off and rolled the tire down the hill and it wobbled the whole way. but yeah i would have a tire shop look at them and get them balanced, a lot of times i get free balancing, well when they like my cammed ss camaro at least, lol.
Still makes the noise with new tires. The sound sounds like a rubbing sound; It kinda sounds like a bicycle tire with a can wedged in the fork to make the sound of an imaginary motorcycle " Its not that ive done that or anything ". Also before all this crap I would put it in gear, let off the brake and the truck would start going. And now it acts as if somthing is binding up I have to give it gas before the truck would even budge . Whats the deal could my brakes make the rubbing sound too? Thanks for all the replies you guys are the best!!
Hopefully it's a balance issue with your tires but also check your u-joints. Remove the four bolts that connect the drive shaft to the rear end and inspect the ujoints. A lot of times when the drive shaft is bolted to the rear end the ujoint will appear tight until yoiu remove it and relieve the pressure on the drive shaft. If the ujoint is bad, it'll be fairly obvious. There should me no slop between the joints.
just a suggestion, but you might be safer going to a certified mechanic at a dealership to get the entire rearend nit-picked,possibly replaced to find/repair the problem you are experiencing.

If the truck has been sitting a while you could have rust build up, or even have plants growing in the brakes, when we parked one of my dad's cars out in the back yard for a few years, the brakes would grined until we pulled the weeds out from the inbetween the brakes and roders.
I never saw what model it is. If it is a f150, remove the wheels and drums. If the axles move up and down or sideways they and the bearings need to be replaced. Once you pull them out you will see grooves in the axles that shouldn't be there.
Now the possible expensive part...Once you are in the bell housing to get the axles out you need to look things over especially the pin that goes through the spider gears. If you find grooves it needs to be replaced, hopefully it is the larger pin, if you have the smaller pin (around 1/2 inch), that one is discontinued, you will need a spider gear kit and a new carrier around $250 for those pieces, if it is the larger pin you can get away with just a spider kit I think around $100. Axles and bearings if I remember correctly are under $200 for the set and bearings.
