I know this has probably been answered before but here goes.i just bought a 2001 Ex 7.3 with 143k miles, I am trying to find out which oil to use , synthetic or regular diesel oil? what I have read is the 15-40 rotella, this is my first diesel and I run mobil one in my pick up. I talked to a friend that is a mechanic and he advised me of the 15-40 rotella regular oil and not the synthetic because of the miles and keeping oil pressure. But its a 7.3 with 143k miles and not a gas engine so its not that hurt. Any help will be appreciated. thanks
A lot of us use Shell Rotella syn 5w-40.. which your engine will love.. 15w40 will work, but if you experience any loping or romping on cold start ups, i would switch to 5w-40 syn.. Your 143K is not excessive mileage..
My experience since I bought the truck... When I bought the truck it had 15W-40 dino in it. I didn't experience any romps on cold starts. It didn't leak oil. I switched to Schaeffer 9000 5W-40 fully synth oil. After the first oil change running that synth. I noticed a leak. It'll leak a little under a half quart every thousand miles. I've been changing it at 6k miles and wanted to go 3 changes before getting an oil analysis. Rotella synth is $19/gal, Schaeffer is $21/gal. Delo and Rotella 15W-40 dino is $10.50 to $11/gal respectively. 5k miles is a good change interval with the Delo and Rotella dino oil. I'm switching back to dino oil today if the weather clears a bit. I'm sure that goes against what most on this forum believe. Our truck is our work truck and I can't justify the business spending double per gallon of oil right now.
IMHO, you can run syn oil longer to make up the difference in price, and it handles heat and cold better making it better for the motor. I run syn Rotella all year and I really like it, so does my truck. I tried Delo once in a pinch, but I didn't like how my truck sounded no the stuff. Buy 4 gallons of it, and a quart of dino. When you're done with the change, put a little of both dino & syn in your freezer -- you'll be amazed.
