I blew up my 330ci and was wanting to know if a SVO 5.0 out of a 03' explorer would drop right in or would there be some issues (clearance, motor mounts, bolt pattern, electronics) any info would be really great thanks.
Don't worry David. The 5.4 that came out of my truck had 250K on it. The rest of the truck is still tight. Dropped a used unit in for $1200 and she's back on the road.
The short answer to your question is...no. The bellhousing is more than likely different as well as the electronics. The ecu is programed for the 5.4L, so timing, fuel, and spark, curves will all be way off. Of course with enough time and money, you could put in a 5.0L.
The cheapest soulution would be another 5.4L, perhaps a long block if you don't want something from the JY.
i talked to the guy yesterday and he has the computer and everything needed just wondering if it would fit the 4r70w bolt pattern and the motor mounts. it is out of a '97 explorer not an '03 like i thought. if not anyone know where i can get a 5.4l for around $1200.00 in the Lexington, KY or Knoxville, Tn areas????
I am not 100% certain, but I doubt the SBF (302) bellhousing is the same as a Modular (5.4L) bellhousing. Maybe Advanced Adapters has an adapter for it. You will more than likely need motor mounts and a new wiring harness as well. The exhaust may have to be changed as well as far as the cats/Y-pipe are concerned.
Also check with local smog laws if this truck is a DD. Most places won't allow you to install an older engine in a newer vehicle.
That was the whole assembly and a can of additive they require for their warranty. They unbolt their motors, and run test/document them when they can. I got a little piece of paper with my compression readings and oil pressure with the motor. It was a pretty long way to ship it, and it was a couple hundred to get it done, so the actual cost of the motor was 900 to 1000. No core charge. I got to take my time and use the best parts of what I had during the swap..... It even had the transmission harness still attached and all the COPS (which is nice, cuz now I have a box of spares). It didn't include the alternator or PS pump. It had a water pump, but I replaced it for safety's sake. All the fluids had been drained and all ports were capped. The only problem with it was a couple of broken exhaust manifold studs (rust). While it was on the stand, I soaked those every day for a week with penetrating oil, got a good heavy duty stud grabber/remover, and twisted them out. A new set of studs and it was ready to go.
It is possible that the 5.0 could bolt to the 4r70w as the 4r70w came from the AOD and AODE trannys. Which ran wiht the 5.0. But the 5.0 swap would be very pointless as it would be less perfomance and probably gas milage as well as a lot of money to customize tuning for the engine.
