i got a project truck for the winter while i'm off work. not ready to spend a bunch money yet. not ready to put to much work in to it yet, but i want to get it ready for the winter to be worked on. will be in freezing cold temps. .
it is a 89 f-250 custom 4wd 460 ci. was sitting under a tree for 2 yrs with a sun roof missing. will NOT start yet, needs spark. but will turn over. i cleaned it up, and it came out better then i thought it would./
the radiatr. had crap brown muddy, rusty, nasty, coolent water in it.
i took the radtr. out and what hoses i could. i cleaned out what i could. put them back in. (cheap acid flush.)
now, what could i do for the block? is there something that i could put in with the water and antifreeze? should i turn it over for water flow?
it is gona sit not running till i get some other things done before i get to the motor. can and will clean, and flush it all again before starting it. i gona get new hoses when i'm ready.
any comments or Questions are welcome, need help.
Thank you all!
P.S. how or when will i be albe to put pics. with the ?'s. i think i got a good deal on this truck, and would like to show it off a little.
there may be a drain on the block, like the 4.6l engines have. or pull out the thermostat, run it a minute or two then redrain it. thats all i can come up with for ya. havent messed with a 460 yet
ok well thanks but it not running yet im just tring to put something in for now to help losen up the muck inside the block.. no there is not a plug that i know of
You could run some prestone coolant flush through it, but you'd need to get it running first. Other than running a garden hose through it and flushing as much out as you can, there isn't much you can do for the block. Just keep it drained if you're going to let it freeze.
you can buy a kit from most auto parts store that lets you run the engine(if you want) while pumping fresh water from a garden hose through the whole system. It works really well. After you get the bulk of it out you can get some radiator flush stuff and put it in and let it sit for a couple days.
pull out the thermostat and put the top radiator hose back on and get a shop rag and your garden hose and stick it in the top radiator hose and poke the rag in around it as much as possible. then you can turn on the hose full blast and blow all the crap outa the motor before its long dry sleep of winter. best you can do without it running.
thats a good idea with the rag and hose. guessing it's gone work the same with a at home presure washer.
Sycostang67: thanks for the help again! do you think it would hurt to put the anti-rust in with anti-freeze and water, for about 2 mounths and let it soak in, then flush it good when i get the motor running?

It wont hurt, just make sure you put more anti-rust back in after you flush it. Chances are since it has started, it wont stop. My mother had a 95 F-150 with the 300 in it with brown muddy coolant. It clogged the heater core 3 times in 150k miles. I flushed the cooling system each time as well, but it wouldn't stop until the freeze plugs finally started rusting out and leaking. I wasn't aware of any anti-rust additives back then or else I would have used some.
here's what i come up with. first im gona flush the block out with a garden hose and a rag. then i found some anti-rust treatment that i can leave in. i'm gona fill it and hope it helps. plus i think i gona try ton get it started for the first time. i just think it's best if i can get it moved around in there good. i wont be able to let run long, but a little is better then not at all
here's what i did!
i flushed the system out with a garden hose till it was clear, then i rinced some more.
then got some anti-rust addative to put in with anit-freeze and water.
so i took my battery out of my other truck to just turn it over (its not running). playing with some loose wires not sure were they need to go.
it enticed me to figure this out.
so i did i got the truck running now, the coolent is good now, next is ti do the rest of the truck, but that is my winter project. got about 4 mths to go so i dont want to rush it.
