I just bought a fuel filter from motorcraft...and I need to know the procedure of replacement.....
Now I've heard of horror stories about replacing it and somehow it gets air locked and has to be bled and ONLY ford dealerships can do that. Or is this just ------>
This one looks to be a 1/2 ratchet attaches to the top of it and turns off. The filter they gave me looks like the canister filters like what BMW and the newer Chevy Cobalt 2.2 Eco Techs use for oil filters. Is this right?
I just don't want to mess this truck up due to my lack of knowledge!! Thanks!!
(This filter is under the hood and is in the plastic housing)

You tube saved the day again! Needed to tie a tie....solved! How to change a fuel filter on your beloved F-irst O-n R-ace D-ay....solved! Didn't think of that one! Thanks!
You either need to buy the cap now or buy a different filter like a baldwin or what ever that have the cap built in to them. and that air is all bs, just fill it up with fuel, or diesel injector cleaner. I used ATF last time just out of curiosity. It worked, not sure if it's ok or not but it worked to get it started. But I had been driving the truck 10 min earlier so it was nice and hot. Wouldn't try that cold.
I would drain it completely FIRST, that way any contaminants outside the filter shouldn't get mixed in. I used a short piece of nylon tubing (3/8"?) to drain into a container.
You can use a spanner wrench or any type of method to get the filter cap off, you cant argue with results unless you break the cap. I have used two screwdrivers before back when my old diesel truck gel-ed up when it was -30 or something crazy. Just be patient, not all of the caps come off as easy as that video, sometimes the seals are stuck from the heat and miles.
If I don't have the fuel filter cap with the ratchet plug on it do I need a different filter? my fuel filter cap has a nut on it.
no you are fine. the ratchet plug is just there to help get it off. the same reason you have a nut on yours. it all depends on the brand of filter as to what they use to do that. i personally never use the ratchet plug. it always seems to strip out and i have to use a strap wrench anyways.
