Starter problem

I have an 88 Bronco, replaced the starter 4 times over the past 3 years. I'm told the headers are generating too much heat around starter and that's why starters keep crapping out. I'm told I can put header wraps around headers, or put a shield wrap around starter (which I already did and have same problem). Putting header wraps around the already corroded header is difficult, should I replace the headers? If so, what kind do I put on? Not sure.

First off, welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate information we can muster.

I gotta be honest. Unless you have headers running less than about an inch away from the starter, the heat is not causing your starter failure. The stock exhaust runs within 6 inches of the starter.

What symptoms does the starter exhibit before it dies? Or does it just up and quit? How long does the engine typically crank before turning over? What brand starters are you buying? Have you done a close inspection and resistance check on the heavy cables running to the starter itself? How many batteries have you replaced in that same time frame?

Too may other things that are more likely to be the issue here.

(No offense g_k50 but you couldn't pay me to put the stock manifolds back on my truck. Loss of power, throttle response and if they are on it for more than two or three years the passenger side will be cracked between cylinders 2 and 3.)

greystreak92, in this economy I think I could find the right amount to pay you to put the stock manifolds on. Ever heard of placebo effect?

Yeah, but the headers and aftermarket exhaust that I run have never caused me any headaches. Why go back to "placebo" if the "medicine" is working?
