Ok well I got a set of Hedman Headers (pn #89120) for my 75 with a fresh 390 and I am having trouble with the starter fitting in. They don't wrap around the motor mounts so they are all crammed in that one area. I don't really wanna get a mini starter but if that what it comes down to, well thats that. Do any of you have any experience with these. If so, let me see what you did to go around my problem.
If they are not fenderwell exit I would not even mess with installing them, you could have front d/s clearance issues and a nightmare of a time rousting the rest of the exhaust sys around/thru and maybe under (loosing ground clearance) the trans cross member.
Basically IMO inside the frame headers are a NO GO, and having to remove the header each time you need to do starter rebuild/replace is not my idea of fun. Good gaskets are too expensive.
I had a 78 1/2 ton 4x4 351M auto and had all those problems mentioned. Or drop the $$ for a mini started just make sure you insulate it with a heat shield or use header wrap to try and keep the heat off it.
Well I got the starter in earlier this afternoon but there is only about 1/8th of an inch of room between the starter and the headers. I'm not sure what I can do but that isn't enough room and I don't want to burn the starter up.
Header wrap and a heat shield off a newer car in the JY? Or some folks say you can make one out of some 16 gauge metal??
I used some O'reilly's header wrap to help with a heat/fuel boiling issue under the hood of the Bronco, works great.
Follow the directions and soak in water before applying, do waste your $ on the metal ties, they are junk, just use some 40 thousands and some wire twist pliers.

That's the one downside of the Hedmans, all the primary tubes are routed behind the motor mount and "cage" the starter in, but how often do you change starters anyway.
The Dynomax and Flowtech headers route the primary tubes fore and aft of the motor mount (requires jacking up motor for install), giving the starter more breathing room, though imo Hedmans are better headers.
Unless you're experiencing heat soak/hard start issues I wouldn't concern myself too much with "burning up" the starter, I got over ten years out of my starter running Hedman #89120's then went with a mini starter only because I got a great deal on it.
