Bad Tranny/Torque Converter???

I bought a 94 Bronco on Wed. drove it all over town for two days and it ran very well except for when I stepped on the gas real hard there would be quick vibration that lasted about 1 second (it felt like I was driving over the groves that are cut into the side of highways to wake you up if you fall asleep).

So, feeling pretty confident in the reliability of the Bronco I took it about 200 miles away to the mountains this weekend to go hunting. On the highway I noticed a slight vibration. When in town I started noticing that at stop lights it was having a hard time "shifting" down when I came to a complete stop (it would make a clunck sound). It did well on Saturday making some medium steep climbs in mud.

On Sunday, however, I was climbing another hill and I stopped at the top when I tried to go again there was no transmission. I would press the gas and the RPMs would rev up but nothing. I would switch gear R'N'2'1'P and did not feel the tranny engaging any gear. However, if I turned the vehicle OFF (not idling) and waited 2-5 minutes, when I started it back up I COULD get the tranny to engage in any gear R'D'2'1 and go for a short distance (until I let off the gas) and then it would disengage and I would have to shut the truck off and wait 2-5 minutes and do it again. Each subsequent try would result in a shorter distance I was able to travel.

After trailering it home and waiting a day I was able to make it several blocks without it "disengaging" on me.
Sorry, this is so long but I have read about 100 posts and none of the other symptoms seem to be the same as mine. I also changed the MLPS but, that did not help.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level and check it for "burnt" smell. You may be looking at a transmission rebuild. If transmission level is ok and it smells burnt, you might try a transmission fluid replacement with some Lucas added to see if it will limp by for a while. I did that on an old C6 in a 78 Bronco and it is still limping along.

It sounds like you have torque converter shudder. Sometimes a fluid change will help that. The fact that you not able to get it to move suggests the tranny may be going out. I'm not a transmission expert, but just sharing what has worked for me in the past.

I checked the tranny fluid and it is overfilled and doesn't smell burnt. However, it is not red like most tranny fluid it is more of a tan or blonde color????

Thanks for your reply husker!

don't forget to drain the converter, and cooler. must have aftermarket fluid in it or just completely wrong ..check line pressure,is plug next to the shifter linkage takes a 7/16 wrench need a gauge that reads at least 300 psi and about a 4 ft long hose so u can drive and watch the pressures. when u change filter make sure their isn't an old o-ring up in the housing from a previous filter. After refilling drive the truck and hang the gauge in ur window watch for a pressure drop. after returning recheck level then stall test it watch pressure and rpms if it doesnt hold then clutches if it does then either converter or solenoid pack. thats my starting spot
