Hi i am new to this forum and just looking for some help with my build. First of all i am building a 1971 ford 460 ( the D1VE Block). the motor had the heads from the 1973 (D3VE heads), now i understand these heads were not the best heads to be using and determaned they were not worth salvaging. i am buying "Edelbrock 61659 - Edelbrock Performer RPM Cylinder Heads" Edelbrock 61659 - Edelbrock Performer RPM Cylinder Heads - Overview - SummitRacing.com, I was wondering what valves, rockers, push rods, springs, and cam i can use in these heads? i would like to the bigest cam and use valves to make the best performance. Keeping in mind i would like to use dome keith black pistons. i am boring .060thous over stock. thinking about a small stroker kit 1 or 2 years down the line, to bring the total cid to 521 ci. i would like my compression to be around 12:1 if do able? Please reply as i will take any advice.
Thanks alot mike....
P.s thinking about running a shot of nos through it once and a while... since i know it matters.
from what ive seen used, go with a comp solid roller look it up on summit.
heres the link to a cam for more of a bigger c.i. engine ofcourse there's different ones but this one might be suitable..my 2cents
ya mabe not quite that big i would like lowrange power as well like good operating a 2000rpm. to be able to do crazy burnouts and still be able to have top end power, from what i understand this cam wont have the power i need in the bottom end. any other suggestions? thanks for your response tho
yea its only my suggestion because i am probably going to go something solid roller whenever i get 460 and build it up a bit, but first college needs to be done with and i need a real job HAHA. but if you have the C6 i'd say just get a nice stall converter so it just puts the engine in the power range at take off, ofcourse also put a shift kit in it. i think from what comp wrote about that group of cams is the smaller number might be better for lower end by im not sure im still new(er) to this stuff. but if your not gonna go with any of that nature try the 4x4 xtreme line from comp ive seen alot of guys on here using them
Couple things mike... First off, what is the engine going in? Secondly, who said the D3 heads are not worth salvaging? They are really pretty good factory heads. Thirdly, if you build an engine now, and then in a few years, want to go with a stroker you are going to either have to buy new stroker rods and pistons with a different compression height or have some custom stuff made to work with the 4.3 stroke crank it sounds like you planned on using.
Miles, the motor is going into a 1975 f100 2WD, well i sent my heads away to be ported and the shop took to much off and hit water jacket in the exhaust port on one of the heads. Now i was going to make do and buy the stroker kit befor new heads but relized i needed a change in plans as i only have so much money. i am just anxious to get this on the road and driving, now i believe the pistons i am buy will be capable of running the 4.3 stroke i want. i will just need new rods. the bottom and in my motor is all fine and should still ba able to handle the power i want to see with a good top end. i am just new to this top end stuff and am worring about valve clearances, and cam and what to use. i have always just used stock parts for motors but thought it was time to make some power.
