Building a 351W......what do you think?

I am building a 79 351W to go into a 86 Bronco (w/C-6 trans). This is my first engine build and would like ANY input on the componets going into this engine....good, bad, and ugly

-The block will be sent to machine shop for all the "usual" and bored .30 over (will recondition stock rods)
-All new bearings and gaskets of coarse
-The heads are stock 78 heads, with a fresh valve job (stock valves). And will do a gasket match
-Will be converted to Serpentine using mustang pulleys & brackets

Here is what will be going into the 351W:

Cam:
Comp cams 35-239-3
Duration @ .050: 218 intake/226 exhaust
Gross valve lift: .493 intake/.512 exhaust
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...%2D3&view=2047

Spings: (recomended for cam)
Seat Load: 120lbs. @ 1.750 in.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D986%2D16&view=2047

Lifters: (recomended for cam)
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D832%2D16&view=2047

-Timing Set: (recomended)
Magnum Double Roller (#2135)

Rockers:
Will convert stock Pedestal Rocker Arms to studs using this kit:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2D16&view=2047
then am not sure on what rockers.....any suggestions?

Pistons:
Keith Black (#151)
Compression ratio: 9.7:1 w/69cc heads
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...%2D8&view=2047

Piston Rings:
Total Seal (#TSR-S9090-40)
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=TSR%2DS9090%2D40&view=2047

Intake:
Edelbrock Performer RPM
1,500 to 6,500 rpm
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...7181&view=2047

Carburetor:
Not sure what carburetor yet

So....what do you think?

Thanks,

Nick~

I think your on to something....I might suggest a weiand stealth intake though. I like my edelbrock carb and 600 cfm is all you really need. I hear a lot of good things about the demon carbs, I think if I purchase another one that'll be the company I get one from. Good luck, hope it goes well.

The stealth is an awesome street manifold. I've never figured out why it is not more popular.

Everything sounds good except if it were me I'd down size the cam, you putting it in a 5000 lbs. truck you need the low end tork, and although that cam is fine for the street you you would gain a lot more in usefull power and tork with a little less duration, and i perfer a 750 cfm on 351 cubes. Good luck DW

P.S. i went back and looked at the cam and it probably would do fine, but if you do go with that cam, degree it and install it 4 dgre advanced and it will lower your power curve a little and give you a nice crisp throtle.

I've got a Stealth on my race car and it works very well
Rather that reworking your heads have you thought about getting different ones?
GT40 heads off an Explorer 5.0L work very well with no modifications.
With the KB pistons make sure you follow their ring end gap instructions or you'll have problems.

If you can, stick to the pedestal type....go with 1.7's if P/V clearance permits
Comp cams mkes a good roller rocker...

Intake for carbs....the stealth has proven itself on the dyno....edging the edelbrock and the holley intakes.

Carb? for your truck...600-650 cfm the holley is good, the holley dominator is better and the demon is a step above that.

Perhaps you should consider performing a search on porting here...lots of good info and will yield up to 25 hp if done correctly.

I would also recommend some headers and dual exh system to aid exhaust flow.

The cam specified should do fine....timing advance like DW specd, is a good piece of advice. I would definitely look into a custom grind though fr best results....comp cams should exchange any unused camshaft for another...so it is your call...head snapping low end torque is what you need on these trucks

I usually deal with Kieth he's a pretty cool guy.

What will you do for ignition?

Watch out and don't just install the cam on the 4 degree advance keyway on your timing set! Make sure you degree it to be sure where it ends up. Comp grinds pretty much all of their catalog cams with 4 deg advance built in so installing it on the 4 deg advance keyway could end up with 6 to 8 degrees of actual advance depending on how accurately the timing set is machined.
