I have a buddy that has a 99 ford "party bus" that is having cold start issues. Typical gpr or gp problem. White smoke and crank and crank and no start. I have been out of town and now I am going to go over and help him try to diagnose the problem. My first guess is a gpr, but I am only familiar with trucks. I have heard that excursions and some california trucks and buses use a glow plug controller instead of a gpr. My first question is how do you get to the gpr if it has one? Is it easier from the front or from the rear through the doghouse? If indeed it is not the relay and the glow plugs themselves(130,000mi my guess the original plugs) what is the easiest way to get at them? The block heater does not seem to work on the bus as he plugged it in for hours and no heat was produced. I thank you for your thoughts and time.
I've never played with the vans, but I'd guess the GPR would be easier to access through the doghouse. If your buddy doesn't have a CEL, then he's got a GPR. The GPCM will throw the light and a code if a glow plug or the controller are bad.
And I'd be careful with that site Jeff. He's got some basic knowledge and the videos help, but most of the videos have been edited, and some of what he tries to prove in the edited video can be very misleading, or just downright wrong. They do provide a general background info though.
