Having a guage that is not a guage is a big deal. I paid for a guage not a decal that looks like headlights for you Nascar fans. If my Edge is reading the same sensors the damn truck is and giving me the real readings then why in hell do I need needles that don't move until there is a problem? The info is there but the dash cluster can't display it. Shameful. As I said, idiot lights without a bulb. Just another example of advanced "engineering" to find a way to increase profits. Well, enough of beating that dead horse, it is what it is as they say. I will continue to watch my Edge for relevent info.
And thanks for that response about the thermostat, I don't think I will go that route but it is helpful. I usually don't tow anymore then a few thousand lbs. I can live with the overheat when I slow down, I would be more concerned if it was spiking while I was storming over a mountain. I only posted it because I wondered what other people were observing.

Reason: spelling
Ford has done the gauges like this for years now. Atleast on the trucks that I have had.
The last ford truck I drove that had functioning gauges.... an 81 F-150. A truck with a non-modular engine and no computer.
It would tell you that oil pressure was high when it was, and it would tell you that coolant was hot when it was over heating.
Our trucks do the same, but just not to much of a drastic change on the needle. I notice in my '08 F-150 when my oil pressure changes. It changes almost everyday depending on temperature. When it's cold... it's higher than normal, and once it's warmed up it moves back to the same spot it is always in.
The gauges work. Maybe just not as specifically as you would like.
Also.... those temps aren't all that high, and the lack of airflow and gearing explain your concerns quite well.
Well again today i drove my truck 174.6 miles and all were towing but 10 of them. Started this morning with a load of firewood in a 6x8 dump trailer and ended with me bringing my 30 ft toy hauler (Camper) home.... I ended up cutting a load of all oak and ash fire wood un split loaded in the dump trailer.. I would say trailer and weight was close to 8-K it was heavy.... Only coming home on a steep hill by my house did my trans go to 160 and engin went to 190. I will never put the 192 ford thermostat back in this truck. I like the 180 i put in it.

Kevin,
If your going to get spooked over a 10-15 degree temperature increase while your little 4.6L work horse is pulling like crazy, then be very very greatful you didn't think it could actually push snow without similar effects.
Perhaps this isn't so much about temperature increase as it is about the factory gauges not keeping you informed of every tiny variation in engine temperature.
My recommendation to you would be to go your dealer and get a little face time with a the fella that works on the F-150's and let him tell you what is normal for your truck equipped with the 4.6L. Then you can stare at your aftermarket gauge cluster without getting stressed out when you decide to push your rig a little harder than normal.

That's fine and and all, but remember the stock thermostat is there for a reason. The higher coolant temps fight engine wear, keep the emmisions low and the fuel economy high (or at least as high as expected with a 6,500lb truck).
Seeing 200+ degree temp output with the vehicle under load, or during a hot day with low airflow isn't really a case to be concerned. Unless you start hearing detonation under load, I wouldn't touch the cooling system at all. I'd be more concerned with making sure trans temps were consistant than worry about engine temperature.
I'm getting the same fuel MPG as i did when i had the 192 in there. My trans temp runs between 140- and 175 when towing... i take very good care of my truck i run super gas in it all the time. And i pull a trailer more normal then any 150 owner i do belive. When normal driving i run about 184 on the engine temp. Truck still warms up fine. I get between 10 and 17 mpg's .
That's fine. I was just making you (and others reading) aware that for everyday driving, hotter engine temperatures aren't necessarily a bad thing. You chose to swap out your 192, for a 180, which again was fine.....but was it necessary?? I guess it might have been if you have a personal issue with slightly higher engine temps when you're towing it is. But in reality, the 200-210-degree temps you were seeing when towing were still well within the normal parameters.

Thank you, that's what I've been trying to say all along.
Guy's i did not mean to come off as sounding like a D*(k And if i did i'm sorry. I understand your points that you have made and am fully aware of what i did. Again i'm 100% happy with my truck on all levels. It dose what i ask of it and more.

Thanks guys... I see your points and what you are trying to say and state. I try to post my info for what i try and do to help others as you to do the same. Could not ask for a better ford forum.
