What is a good after-market reader for the PCM of a 2003 6.0?
I have a SCT X3 that will not report any DTC codes.
My truck is extremley hard to start when cold ~ 50 degrees. The truck starts perfect once warm.
I want to troubleshoot the glow plugs and I need to be sure if the PCM is logging any glow plug or GPCM codes. I don't think my SCT will read all codes.
if you have a laptop go with the autoenginuity with enhanced ford software it can test your glowplugs any idea what flash you have in your truck the inductive heating flash solved a world of problems in my 03 including cold starting
I am not sure what flash I have, I am using Innvative Diesel custom tunes. I just got the tunes and the hard start problem got worse. The truck has always been finnicky when starting cold, the custom tune from Innvative Diesel made the problem worse.
It's probably not glow plugs, it's probably injectors. IIRC the GPCM will probably throw a CEL if it malfunctions, although I'm not absolutely positive on that. My truck does the same thing. I had my FICM reflashed with "moderate" tuning because of my larger injectors and I have cold start issues when it gets around 60. I know my glow plugs are functioning properly so I just plug in my block heater for a bit and problem solved. I also had the inductive heating removed to prevent future FICM issues as it's easier for me to deal with injectors than a FICM.
After sudying the resource material posted on our site here I learned where all the glow plug harnesses were and inspected them.
I found the entire left bank (pasanger side) glow plug connectore hanging loose unplugged from the GPCM. This must have been the case for years as I always had trouble starting the truck cold.
No glow plug power at all on the left bank. The question is.. Has this caused any excelerated cylinder wear.
The new tunes simply made an old problem worse...now it starts fine in colder temps so far.
