hard starting 96 v8

2 days ago my 96 v8 was hard to start after I made a stop to gas up, about 10 minutes of off time. What it did was hit on a couple of cylinders while cranking and not start. A couple of times it would start and idle for about 10 seconds at approx 200rpm, real rough.
What I did to get it started was floor gas pedal while cranking it once going it idled and drove fine.

To add to it I had been driving with check engine light on due to bad O2 sensor, the the check engine light is off now with the error code after this incident. I confirmed it with code reader error still there.

I had driven it 1400 miles so everything up to operating temp. This occured after I had fueled up in Kansas a couple of times and Denver once, what I had noticed was ethenol in every fuel grade, I think 10% but not sure.

ideas???

Similar to your other post regarding the HO2S, I'd suggest you start with a tune up. Sounds like you have a misfire. If a tune up was recently performed, or at least spark plugs and/or wires, make sure the wires are all seated properly.

Does your scan tool have the ability to monitor pending codes? If so, were there any for misfires on specific cylinders? How about for the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)?

I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes after returning home, it seems to start fine for now.

same thing on the error code, PO133 oxygen sensor, with the check engine light still off.
No other error codes.

the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is that the one in the distributor hole?

Nope, the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is in the distributor hole. The CKP is located just above and to the side of the crankshaft pulley, lower front of the engine.

Looks like a crank sensor is pretty economical, Oreilly $24-29 depends on the model.

Why is the check engine light off with the error? ECM somewhat damaged????

If the sensor is intermittent, it may or may not have a pending code, and probably hasn't acted up enough yet to trigger a current code. Or, the CKP may not be the problem.

I did run in to one that was failed and did not set a diagnostic code. Oddly that one failed the same time as the fuel pump. My friend's wife went out to start her Sport in the driveway, wouldn't start. Her husband found no fuel pressure, verified the inertia switch wasn't tripped, didn't hear the pump priming the system. He changed the pump in the driveway, still wouldn't start but now had fuel. I went over and found he had no spark. I backprobed the CKP while he cranked the engine, no signal on the oscilloscope. He bought a new CKP, I installed it, and the Sport fired right up. There were no stored or pending codes for either failed component.

But I still have the po133 code, which prior to the start issues had been there with the check engine light on.
Now no light but PO133 still there, just odd that the no start would couse that.

thanks for your help,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,

As I mentioned in post #2 above, I think you have a misfire that you need to address first. You're right, a CKP is not likely to cause the poor idle. The cause of the poor idle is likely the cause of the P0133, not the other way around.

I have replaced the crank position sensor sometime ago, still has start issues every so often.

The Camshaft Position Sensor involved during starting?

96 explorer 5.0 V8 2 wheel drive.
