I live in Denver and at the end of the month I will be helping a friend move from Kansas City to Denver. I have a 24' enclosed trailer that stands 11' tall from the ground. Should I dare pulling that big empty box from denver to KC? Do you think one Colorado plains/Kansas gust of wind would take me over? Once it is packed up for the haul back I would be fine.
It would be nice to have the all the room to pack things, but there is always UHaul, and not to mention the gas I would save.
Just keep the speed safe most pepole tow to fast. Just because you can means you should. Watch the Bushes on the side of the road for wind and keep a hand on the wheel at all times.
i don't think your truck will have a problem pulling it. its the drag that will cause bad fuel economy. So can it do it? Yup. Just hope it has brakes on the trailer especially with those mountains.
If an unloaded 48' Semi Van trailer with that much surface area and high up off the ground doesn't topple, i think a low slung half the length trailer would be fine.
It will do it fine, but it ultimatly comes down to do you want to go through the hassle of pullin it for him? he better buy you a beer or two!
Thanks for the reply guys. I wasn't ever worried if I could pull it, I have just never pulled that thing in the wind.
Speed limits for trailers in KS is 55 and in CO its 65. I get my best mileage/power around 60-65, so I will probably keep it around there, depending on the weather and traffic. You never really know untill the drive. I learned fast to take it easy with a trailer, after I first got gigantor - thats what I call the trailer- I smoked the tires from skidding trying to come to a stop at a light. Luckaly no one was in front of me and I just used up some tread.
My buddy is actually paying for my gas and taking me to this killer steak joint in KC. The guy has been my best friend since middle school, I would pull anything anywhere for that kid.

.
Speed limits in KS are not different for anything. I-70 is a 70mph speed limit from Colorado state line to KC, Kansas where it drops to 65mph.
Also try a brake controller and set it right you will stop almost as good as you can empty.
I went to a web site, I'm sorry I dont remember which one it was, but it posted all the speed limits in each state that apply when you are pulling a trailer, thats where I found that 55 in KS. I will try to find that again.
I will call my friend and find out the name of the steak house. I remember it being just across the border on Missouri side, and it was featured in playboy mag sometime so they have this big 25oz steak named the playboy. Hey I just found it online, it's Jess and Jim's steakhouse. www.jessandjims.com mmmmmm good stuff

You should be fine as long as you keep the speeds at a reasonable level and use common sense.....ie....if the weeds are lying flat, back it down a ways.
If you're really nervous about running empty, you could always spring $25 for 10 backs of Sakrete. That would give you 800 lbs of extra ballast for the deadhead to Ks. When you arrive safely, set the bags in an empty parking lot with a sign that says "Free concrete mix, take it!" Somebody will be glad to haul it away.

What ya think?
Thanks guys!
This may sound silly but that is basically a down hill pull and with generally prevailing tail winds in route and it would be a LOT easier than towing it from KS to Denver. Just watch you speed and temps and you should do fine (I assume you have at least a 3/4 ton truck for stabilty)
SnoMan- I have a one ton, so I will be good there. Frizlefrak- I actually was planning on filling up 10 6-gal water jugs and putting them in the trailer. I figured it would be better than nothing, and cheap. I never thought to use those concrete sacks, those are pretty heavy.
I really don't think you should try it.
You don't have any experience at towing & your driving ability is below even average. You will probably have an accident maybe even kill somebody. It's not worth it. Hire a professional to do it. You'll be glad you did.

With a 1 ton P/U it will not be a problem. It is not like trying to do it with a 1/2 ton. A 1 ton P/U is a serious tow vehicle with the brakes, tires and suspension to go with it to for stabilty and control.

who are you to call all those shots? id say hell be fine, just watch it, and the water idea is good cheap insurance.
