Pulling 97 Powerstroke engine for oil pan

Our '97 F-350 Powerstroke has the infamous rusted oil pan that is going to need replaced soon. We use this truck rather often and also plow snow in the winter with it. We were thinking maybe we should do it soon so as not to have it cause a problem in the middle of a huge snowstorm. Also may be buying a larger trailer soon and this truck will be doing more towing. It currently has about 175,000 miles, starts and runs great, and tranny seems to shift fine. My question is, what other preventative things should be done while the motor is pulled for the oil pan? Don't want to spend a fortune but also don't want to be fixing something else very soon. This has been a great truck and is in good shape so we want it to be around for awhile. I have heard the motor mounts are a good idea to do as well, is there anything else that we should consider on the engine or transmission? Thanks in advance.

You could put new o-rings (rebuild kit) in the oil cooler. I've never had to do it but word is it is a heck of a lot easier with the engine out.

Thanks for the reply, was just reading that is another common problem. Was also thinking the injector o-rings should be done since I'm pretty sure they have never been replaced. Anything else?

If the water pump has never been replaced and with your miles that would be a good option. It's not hard to do with the engine in though. Check your fuel filter to fuel pump hoses and replace if they look weathered. You can get a kit from Ford.

I dream of working on an engine out of the truck ...

When I do my injectors am going to call Jim @ Rosewood Diesel, a sponsor on this site and get the complete rebuild kit.

New engine and transmission mounts for sure.

Oil plug o-rings would be good to replace. Passenger side rear especially.

Check your up pipes too. Best time to replace them.

Make sure that new pan has some good paint on it.

I'd replace the o-ring where the dipstick goes into the pan for sure

what he said^^^^ plus do the glow plugs and you can pull the injectors and replace the o-rings or get a kit from diy-injectors to rebuild the injectors a little larger for more power(programming is needed). definitely do the dipstick o-ring that is inside the pan!!! you do NOT wanna do this with the engine in the truck. i have done it and it was nerve racking the whole time and the o-ring still leaks a little bit.
