So I just got a bunch of 1/4" plate and was looking to fabricate a front and rear bumper for my truck. I know 1/4" is a little heavy for the front but its what I have. Does anyone have any bumper plans that I could use to build my bumber. Thanks in advance.
Ive designed and built many bumpers of the offroad variety using 3/16" up 3/8" usually in diamond plate. I might be able to help you its a matter of what kind of bumper you want. How detailed of plans you need, your skill level, what kind of tools you have available, etc. Meaning do you just want a bumper do you want pipe inlaid or grille guard, or brush guard etc. And concidering what Im known for do you have a cherry picker to be able to pic it up to hang it on the truck, my bumpers avg about 500 lbs. If your interested let me know what you want and Ill see what Ive have laying around design wise and get it to you. Also do you have access to cad that might help too.
That would help me out a ton! I am going to be building it at my work. I would like to totally replace the front bumper with the one i'm making. It would be cool if it had a grill guard but that can added on later. I do have a cherry picker, i have a plasma cutter, mig and stick welder, grinders with cutoff wheels, torches. I have never built a bumper before but i have done a lot of metal working. Thanks a lot for helping though.
ok just give me an idea of what all your looking for in bumper and Ill se what I can out together for you as I dont have any designs specifically for these trucks laying around Ive usually designed em as needed, depending on what me or my customers wanted, on these trucks the most important part os the mounting tabs on the back simply align two pieces of strap acrross those and bolt em and figure out your square for the backing brace I personally would recommend using anlge iron on those , and then it for a semi small bumper (basically stock size measure your height dimensions as you want the to be) figure your length factor in any wrap around draw a 3D dimension of this then start adjusting as needed adjust angles of tire clearances, skid styling on the front, winch mounts, tow hooks, brush guards, etc. Or if youd rather just do a rough drawing of what youd want on there and send it to me and Ill engineer it for and send you some plans.
I'm gonna try and make on about the size of the stock one, mabey a little larger but not by much. Thats a good way to get started it think i might start drawing it out tonight
I'm looking to do pretty much the same thing. I wanna build a bumper that is similar to the ones road armor or fab fours make. They look great, can hold a winch, have tow hooks, and can run through small trees. Only they're pricey so I want to build it instead. If you are makin anything like that I would gladly take plans
Depending on what your intended usage is you need to be aware of the mounting method as the stock tabs are good for a lot but, not nessasrily enough for high weight applications specifically the pulling force of a 10k lb winch especially on any sideward angle pull, those I would recommend reinforcing with a back strap down the sides of the frame rails, pluss these help with the weight balance and distribution on heavy bumpers. Also if you are intending a winch mount you need to factor in a carry basket to mount it, and the the nessasary excess forward length unless your intending to low mount it. but then you need to refactor you drop heights, and clearance angles.
