Fuel/Water Separator

Im planning on adding a fuel/water separator soon, along with getting rid of all the quick connectors in the fuel supply system, and was curious if a gasoline separator will work for diesel also. Other then dahl and racor, not many are listed as diesel, but there are plenty of them that are listed as fuel/water.
I contacted this person and he said to call him and he would persue the information for me by calling the manufacturer. Im interested in this one for now because its cheap and 10 micron, and has the 3/8 ports I want for the future prepump install. (crappy part is that I misses a new dahl for 21 dollars a while back..darn weddings)

GLM Water Fuel Separator Die Cast Aluminum 10 Micron:eBay Motors (item 330363348667 end time Oct-26-09 19:43:34 PDT)

as always, thanks for the help.

Never heard of it. I that is the route you are looking. I suggest you go to NAPA for the head and filter/separator. NAPA's canister has a drain petcock.

Hope this helps.

I asked about a fuel/water separator earlier from them (local napa in a large city of maine) and the two people behind the counter didnt really have any idea what I wanted, and kept asking me what vehicle i had so they could look up the filter for me. I gotta get up north to the real napa stores and talk to someone who can think outside the computer I guess.

Id use a fuel/water filter setup off a trailer truck if I had the room, I see some sweet <10 micron filters at the truck garage that were 12" long, lol. Those would get the job done.

What's wrong with that? Get a bracket and mount it to the outside face of the frame rail. If the top is near the top of the frame, the bottom won't hang down any lower than the fuel tank.

How far do you have to drive until you get to the country? Of course with the internet, I guess you don't really have to drive at all. Check around at tractor places. A farm tractor typically has a separator you can get that's half the size you're talking about. You can also look into some fleet places that sell to big truck and tractor folks like a Fleetpride shop or something. They can order you a filter / separator set up. Fleetpride has a place in Scarborough. ME 04074, wherever that is.

Fleetpride is a commercial fleet type place. They sell all the major brands, (Baldwin, Racor, Dahl, Cummins Filtration, etc.) and they should know more about things than the kids at NAPA. They'll probably try and sell you a spin on from Racor or Baldwin at first since that's the more common set up, but I've seen the glass bottom bowl with a drain valve like I have on a farm tractor in a catolog there once. The whole assembly is around 5" - 6" tall and should do exactly what you want.

When I was looking for a pre-pump filter for my truck, they gave me a baldwin catalog to take home so I could find what I wanted. They've got access to what you want if you're willing to do the homework. Let us know what you find.

Awesome, thanks. Ill look into that at napa, the wix lookup site shows that to be a nice filter with drain, and <12 micron. If I can get a filterhead that is 3/8 npt then ill be very interested in that.

Does anyone know the ?restriction value? of a 10 micron filter. As in what vacuum does it take to pull fuel through the filter. How are these rated. Id like to put the filter before the lift pump but was not sure if it would work well. Guzzel had put his filter after the pump and had a leak, but then swapped to a dahl filter and no issues after. My concern is the potential leakage, the liftpump im interested in is higher capacity then the carter he had used, Id rather not worry about a leak.
Basically what im asking is, can I suck fuel through a half dirty 2 or 10 micron filter without burning up the pump prematurely.

You will be fine with 10 micron filter pre-pump. I ran 2 micron for two years I think in my
DAHL-150. I just changed it to the 10 micron a few weeks ago. I WAS running a Carter helper pump with the 2 micron pre-pump filter. Hole other story.....Now I'm running a new stocker after the 10 and before a wix 2 micron to the fuel-bowl delete block from ITP.

Napa part numbers that my 1989 Case 821 wheel loader uses... 3357 and 3358

3357 is fuel/water seperater ... 3358 is fuel filter
I dont have micron info and the 3358 is kinda on the small side it seems to always have enough fuel

Well, it looks like I bought a fleetguard filter and head setup. Goes to a trailertruck or something im sure, but its big, and has the port size I was looking for, and its a 2micron filter. I got the filter head and two filters with water drains for 32 dollars. It is a common 1-14 filter head so I can use a lot of the other types of filters on it as well, so I think I got a decent deal.
Thanks for the help guys, Ill keep you posted on my project once I gather the rest of the parts.

I am very happy with the filter and filter head I just picked up. It is a 2 micron filter with a water drain and a water sensor (im assuming)
The filter head is aluminum with a vent or pressure port at the top, and high flow npt ports on the sides. Just what I wanted....I think, lol.
Sorry the first pic is too wide.
Now to aquire the rest of the fuel system...
