2008 6.4 - what kind of oil should I use and where is the water separator drain?
I have a 2008 F350 with the 6.4 diesel. I just bought the truck about 1000 miles ago.
It magically produced some more oil so I'm thinking I'm going to change it.
Can I just use Rotella 15w40? Does it take the same oil filter as the 7.3s do?
And where is the drain valve for the fuel/water separator?

See page 45 of the diesel supplement..here http://www.motorcraftservice.com
but net, 15w40 above 30f, and 10w30 below.
not same filter as 7.3.. or 6.0.. we all recommend ONLY Ford oil & Fuel filters..
change oil every 5,000 miles, fuel filter every 10,000 miles.
the water separator is on the chassis rail just forward of the drivers seat.. you gotta lay on the ground to get to it (unless u have a lift).. yellow lever to open
(this is where the lower of the two fuel filters is located as well)
the extra oil is a side effect of the emissions equipment implementation that Ford did. to reduce the smoke, they installed a filter in the exhaust.. eventually the filter fills up.. so that start a controlled fire to clear the filter (this is called Regeneration/regen).. there are two approaches to do this..
add more stuff and inject fuel after then turbo into the exhaust.
use the existing injectors, inject fuel that won't be burned in front of the turbo.
Ford uses this second approach.. sometimes fuel gets past the cylinder rings and gets into the oil. Ford says 10% fuel in Oil is ok. we all think thats crazy..
but you need to watch it carefully if making oil so it doesn't fill the crankcase..
(usually lots of oil means something should be looked at (stuck injector, ...)

Welcome to the SuperDuty team!
Thanks for the info. The temps around here have been anywhere from 9* to 50*. What oil should I go with?
