Would swapping the muffler out for a section of straight pipe give the same sound as dumping it under the bed or no? I definitely wanna go for a V8 type of sound. Tractor sound works for me too. And what option would be best for performance? I read that as far as the cats go, it's only worth getting a high-flow cat if you spend over $150 on it; that the magnaflow cats don't make much of a difference.
EDIT: I only know about 4-banger exhausts so this is like new territory for me, even though I've had the truck for longer than I've had my car.
Well, I can tell you that when mine was DUMPED, with two cats and NO muffler, it sounded like a tractor. When I cut off one cat and ran a full length tailpipe, my truck adopted a more Cummins like tone, but was also more buzzy.. I prefer dumped, but that's me.
You're used to dealing with 4-bangers; treat the 300 in the same way with exhaust. I swear, at one point my truck sounded like an import. That was when I had both cats and a flowmaster 40 dumped.
The cheapest way; cut off the muffler and run a length of pipe to clear your cab. Dump it under your truck bed. See how you like it. =)
By the way, you may like the full length tailpipe approach. The truck had a really nice and loud V8 idle and popped and crackled coming off rev. Everyone likes different things; just mess around until you get it how YOU like it. Screw everyone else. =)
Thanks man! I have to do emissions testing at least next year, I think in 2012 I can tag it historic and not worry about it. So for now I'll probably do full length so I don't get any problems when they want to hook the hose up to my tailpipe.
