air filter questions.

i want to get a new airfilter for the truck.
there are so many types and sizes. i want to know
what would be best for my 400.

i see some on summit that are 3 inch 4 inch 5 inch 6 inches.
i want to buy the base, filter, and top cover.

are the filter type top covers good or bad?

can too tall a filter be a problem?
i was looking at something like this
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-239461/
any info would be great.

Thanks.

That should work, i just went to the local Auto Zone and got mine. They had several to choose from, It depends on what flavor you like, I picked Holley! Oh well. I had one with the lid that was also a filter element and she backfired once and burned right through it so i would say stick with metal top. Also all are not created equal so i also got a 1"1/2spacer to raise the filter base.

The Edelbrock foam filter top will catch fire. The K&N Extreme filter top is nice when you have limited space and need the air flow. A nice arrangement is a stock Ford dual snorkle(Mustang) air clear with it ducted to the core support to draw in cool air. There is an aftermarket air cleaner with same arrangement(maybe Spectre). Open air cleaners are cheap, but draw in a lot of hot air from the engine. Any good 14x3" air cleaner should give you sufficent flow. Lot of choices.

I run a K&N as well, just keep it oiled, it's the oil that suspends the dirt particles, a dry filter will let a lot of crap pass through.
