460 Crank

I have a 429. I want to buy a 460 Crank for it but i dont know if i will work. Help me out guys. Are the 429 and 460 Main bearings the same? What about the rod bearings? Can i use the 429 balancer? Anything else i will have to buy different? Thanks!!

The bearings should be the same but you will need new pistons with different pin height for the longer stroke. Balancer should be the same also.

You have to decide if you're going to use the internal or external balance 460.

Yes, I agree. This will determine what balancer you can use.

Save your 429 short block!

I would build another short block with a 460 btm end. I have a spare 429 complete setting in my storage just in case situation. Bearings are the same but is your crank standard or .010 under on mains or rods on bearing clearance. Lots of little questions that could kill your project if not checked. Good luck and if possible do another short block.

429/460: The rod/main bearings are the same.

D4VZ6316A .. Harmonic Balancer

Fits: 1971/73 429 / 1973/78 460 and thru midyear 1979 460 / ALL with block casting numbers of D1VE-6015-AB, -AB1, -AB2.

Mid-year 1979: Ford changed the 460 block. This block (casting number D9TE-AB) uses a weighted spacer, the D1VE blocks do not.

The flywheel and harmonic balancer used with the D9TE block are not the same as the ones used with the D1VE blocks.

This D9TE block changeover was a "running change" so there is no production date or serial number break.

Passenger Cars were not affected, because the 460 was not available in cars after 1978.
