Does anyone have a method or have heard of a way for cleaning the ac/heating system? I looked at one of my dash vents yesterday, which I don't check very often, and noticed a lot of dust inside the vent. Living here in the desert there is serious dust during and after one of our high wind storms. The previous owner of my expy was asmoker and even though I've owned it for 3 years I'm wondering if it could use a good cleaning to flush out any residue.
Any input will be appreciated on this.
I forgot what it was called but they do make a spray that sprayed into the vents that would remove most smells. As for the dust Im not sure but you could try to blow out the vents with a air compressor.
The vents do come off. Once they're off you can use a small rag attached (use tape, wire ties, etc.) to a piece of old garden hose (for flexibility) and slide it down into the ducts. Spin, pull, and push until the dust has been removed. Spray something like pledge on the rag and it will aid in the removal of the dust since it makes dust cling to the rag instead of just falling down lower.
That just covers up the problem for a short period of time. If the A/C system is actually growing mold and fungus, then you could have a serious heath issue. It's much better to get rid of the mold/fungus than it is to just cover it up.
lol, my Grandfather was a HVAC owner of Pete's Refrigeration in Houston, TX. He always used to turn his ac from MAX to Normal after stopping his car. Then, he would shut it off before starting it. I used to think it was the oddest thing. I thought he was obsessive compulsive.
Now, the joke is on me! Hard to believe...but makes perfect sense after reading the article.
