Question for NumberDummy

Bill, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question on two parts numbers. Power steering gear box #C6AB-3580-A2 and rear diff. #C5TA-2795-1... 4.10. Trying to make out if these are model year or someone has replaced them, as I am finding out many things on the truck were. Thanks again.

If all you want is the year: The first letter is the decade C=6, the second number is the year 5 or 6. C5 is 65 & C6 is 66

First Digit: Decade
A = 1940's (often omitted)
B = 1950's
C = 1960's
D = 1970's
E = 1980's
F = 1990's

Second Digit: Year Number
Last digit of year of introduction or revision. This number corresponds to the decade shown in the first digit.

Thus C5 = 1965.

Thanks, Dusty, that helps, but what I meant by model year, and I probably caused some confusion there, was, is it the pwr strng gear box that came with the truck, and which rear end is it? I know there were a couple of rears that came with it, but do not know if it is a Dana 60 or what??? My biggest source of confusion is that the previous owner(s) changed up many things, including the motor and trans. I have since discovered that I have either a 351C or 351M/400(haven't dug too far yet), and an FMX or thereabouts, trans. Thanks again for your input.

C6AB-3580-A2 is the ID number for the sector shaft housing cover ONLY.

It is not a P/S ID tag, that was originally on a metal tag bolted to the housing.

This is a Ford P/S gearbox, prolly from a 1965/72 Galaxie/LTD, 1966/72 Fairlane/Torino (and etc), or 1969/72 F100/350, because in 1973, the ID number for that cover was D3AB.

However...

This P/S Gearbox uses two seal kits. These are the SAME kits from 1965 thru the 1990's for LTD's, Crown Vic's. Merc Grand Marquis, and etc.

These two kits also fit late 1969 thru 1996 F100/350's, 1978/96 Bronco's.

You CANNOT go by Ford ID, casting or part number prefixes to ID what years parts fit or what their application is!

Because....Ford is in-famous for updating 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY year.

In fact...

D7AZ3E501B .. Ford P/S Gearbox Sector Shaft Seal Kit / Available from Ford.

D7AZ3E501B replaced:: D7AZ3E501A, D3AZ3E501A, C5AZ3C538A.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
F3AZ3E502A .. Ford P/S Gearbox Input Shaft Seal Kit / Available from Ford.

F3AZ3E502A replaced: D7AZ3E502A, D3AZ3E502A, C5AZ3C538A.

See what I mean?

Hobbyists who have zero Ford parts experience, zero knowledge on how Ford operates...should not be relied upon to post factual info.
================================================== ==================================================
C5TA-2795-1 (not a 1, prolly an A) is related to brake parts (2795: parking brake cable bracket).

Brake parts are in the 2000 group, rear axle parts are in the 4000 group.

4.10-1: This rear axle could be a Dana 60, Dana 60.2, Dana 60.3, Dana 61-1, or a Dana 70.

Look on the axle housing adjacent to the inspection cover for the bolted on Dana ID tag.

This tag is 2" x 1/2" and has seven or eight numbers on it. Like this: 603010-1 or 603010-11.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
351C = 1970/74 Passenger Cars/Ranchero's only.

FMX: 1969/80 Passenger Cars/Ranchero's only, with one exception: 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6 used FMX's.

Yeah, Bill, I'm startin to see the light!! Thanks for the info, however, in my delirium over finding some numbers, I left out what may be important info for the axle code. Here's what I found out; I gave you the code, C5TA-2579-1.... 4.10. What I should have told you about the tag is this; vertical tag, top line reads C5TA- VD, bottom line reads 2795-1 4.10. After further research about the axles, and some serious cleaning, I found a number id'ing the model as a 60 or an 80. Can't differentiate the 6/8. Inspection cover looks like a 70??? What was stamped on the axle housing was this; 42260 1 2795-1. From what I can decifer, 42260 1 is the date code and the 2795-1 is the bill of material code, but I could not find a 603xxxx prefix. I got my info from www.drivetrain.com, but can only go as far as the next opinion. Still working on the pwr strng. Thanks for your time

C5TA-VD = Dana 60 / 4.10-1 / non Limited Slip / 5200 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

What it was originally installed in: 1965/66 F250's except 4WD, except Camper Specials.

The bolted on Dana ID tag was not used prior to 1973.
