I need to install a brake controller in my 97 and have heard about a harness that you can buy that you plug in under the dash somewhere and wire your controller to that. Just wondering if anyone has used this and might have a part # as well as a quick "how to" Thanks for any help!!
plug is under the dash. you adapt the new harness to the new controller. sometimes you can buy the new controller already setup with the FORD plug- check that. You might need a relay to get the trailer brakes, etc to work. Some trucks did not have that. How many wires at the bumper plug, 4 or 7?
I do have the factory tow package and have the round 7 pin plug at the hitch. I already have the controller. I got it from a friend that had it on a much older f-150 for a while and pulled it out before he sold the truck. The controller is a tekonsha voyager and has 4 wires coming out of it. It was manufactured may of 97 so the instructions do not include the new to 97 body style. I looked at that same harness on ebay right before I started this thread but the ebay add gives two part #s so I wasn't sure if it is the right one. Can anyone tell me what and where to look under the dash for the correct wiring harness? Thanks again!!
The wire harness you are looking for is located on the right side of the drivers footwell, a few inches right of the hood release. It is a 6(3x2) wire plug, though it only has 4 wires running to it blue, black, red and white (if I recall correctly). You can pick up the wire harness adapter at pretty much any parts store (I got one at princess auto). I cannot help you out with a part number, the packaging should tell you what it fits.
I found a harness at napa yesterday for $10 and hooked everything up last night. My controller plug was right on top of my obd 2 plug. Thanks for the help guys!!
