A buddy of mine has a '00 V-10 Excursion, and I have an '01 w/ a 7.3 PSD. We
are both having the same problem with the lock on the rear hatch door. It will NOT lock with the key, or the remote. Neither of us have taken it apart yet to check it out. Both too busy with work right now to take the time. Was just wondering if anyone knows of a common failure in the Excursions with this lock before we start tearing things apart. Thanks for any help you may offer!!!
I would bet the mechanism is just gummed up (although the solenoid is likely bad too). I replaced the solenoid a few years back and the whole mechanism was kind of sticky. That's the only reason I can think of why neither a key or remote would work (unless you have or a bent rod or messed up cable). But if you take out the mechanism to clean it, you'll be able to visually inspect all the pieces. Fortunately, its a pretty quick job. If memory serves, just unscrew the handle, and the plastic pulls off.
I just doused the whole thing (its kind of complicated-looking with springs and levers and stuff) in WD-40 to get all the old crud out and then sprayed some white lithium grease (from a spray can) to get it re-lubed.
Just make sure you pay attention to how you slide the thing out, because I spent a loong time wrestling with it before it would go back correctly.
Hi Folks, I also have a '00 Ford Excursion w/a 6.8 V10 and I have been having the same exact problem that you described with the Lock mechanism. I keep meaning to have the FORD Dealer work on this issue and low and behold you guys have posted the problem just as I was in the process of browsing thru the Forum on this great site. If any one figures out what to do to solve the problem that would greatly appreciated. This is one of the only minor problems I have ever had with this Vehicle. I have also made several after market upgrades to various components to the Truck and have had no problems at all !! Upgraded Headlights, custom Front grill, After market Fog Lights, Custom Exhaust, Remote Start solution, Power Chip for improved engine performance, Custom dual front steering stabilizer kit, Front captains chair seat covers & Monroe Heavy Duty Gas Shocks and all new Michelin Truck Tires. Thanks !!
I have had this exact problem and afreemanmd is right. Your mechanism is dirty. Take the handle off and then pull the plastic cover off and you will see how the mechanism works. Get a can of spray cleaner and a rag and douse the thing. I think I went through a full can the first time, there was so much dust in there. I then lubed it with wd-40 and worked the mechanism by hand about 50 times until I felt that it was moving freely enough. Some dry lubricant might be a better idea, as I'm sure more dust will get in there eventually. It's really a pretty simple thing to do once you figure out how to get the molding off and what you're looking at.
Somebody changed the lock on mine but they really get dirty inside there. All you can do is spray a little penetrating oil in the levers, rods, etc work them repeat, repeat, repeat, and then give it a shot of lubricant. The themister is probably shot also in the actuator. Give yourself at least an hour just to clean it.
I too have had this issue. The mechanism was actually bent in mine and the actuator had broken free from the bracket. I had to do a little tweaking to get it to work smoothly along with the previously mentioned cleaning and lubrication. Took me less than an hour, but, I work on this kind of stuff all the time, so I'm used to it.For reference, the lock actuator in the hatch is the same exact part number as the driver front door lock actuator.
I did not take the lock all the way whne I cleaned mine. I did have to take a screwdriver and pry it back and forth a few times to get it to move. Sprayed a ton of cleaner in there and finally it seems to work right. Took about an hour of messing. Seems to work fine now.
