Would it be wrong to put a 4 cyl cummins in the 64? the engine that was in it is a 57 312 bored .030..I dont think the 312 needs to go back in because I believe it to be too small and under powered for the truck and the diesel should do better on fuel and have more power anyways.
I personally agree not to waste too much money on a y-block. People love them but if you have one and don't like it, you wont ever like it. A diesel would be just as interesting.
Cummins said its 16-valve electronic 4 cyl. offers 145- and 170-hp. models, with peak torque reaching 420 lb.-ft.
Thunderbird four-barrel 312 was rated at 245hp, although even the well built ones never came close to 400ft lbs.
I pulled the old engine and it is in fact a 57model 312.I checked the casting numbers on the mains, block, rods.I just think that the 312 is valuable enough to not ruin it driving all over. I have access to the engine and a 4 speed trans,I howerer have a friend that works at a delivery truck repair shop.He can come up with an overdrive to fit later. For now I am just going to step the rear gear way down. I am not going to try to pull big loads but it an open trailer with a car maybe.Mainly a dependale efficent driver.AND it would b different!
Well....Change of plans.I am going tomorrow to pick up a 5.9 6cyl cummins with an Allison 4 speed auto.
It turns out the 4 cyl was not that good a deal and this deal is better.
Also I was concerned about power.I know the 5.9 will do more than I need without any problem.
Lots of work ahead of me now.
Has anyone ever seen an allison medium truck trans before?
let me tell you...It is HUGE! heck the 5.9 is large.
I have it in the back of my 01 supercrew and the poor gal is squatting bad.
The guy I bought it from said 2k lbs.He was correct.
This is going to be fun!
