Fuel pressure too high=problem?

I was reading in a detroit diesel service manual that too high fuel pressure would cause poor engine performance. Has anyone found this to be true?

In can lead to busted lines/seals and decreased fuel mileage. Do you have a pressure reading? I am running about 72psi and don't notice any ill-effects. I have only heard of people noticing real issues when they got up around 100psi, which really is too high.

When I checked last summer I had about 85-90 psi IIRC. I've read 65 psi or is the ideal pressure. I have a new Bosch fuel pump to put on from our buddy Clay at Riffraff that is just waiting for free time to install. If that DOESN'T cure the high fuel pressure, what should I check next?

Possibly a restriction in the return line to the tank. Try blowing air back through the return line back into the tank to see if it clears up the problem. 85-90 is pretty high, too high really.

I doubt the pump israeli is the problem. They deliver a fixed amount and it's regulated but a plunger on the return line mounted to the fuel filter housing. Normally high fuel pressure readings come about when someone has taken apart the plunger and spring assembly. Normally to shim the spring, clean it, change the spring, or install a frx setup. Have you done any of these things?

Check the regulator on the fuel bowl. It may be stuck. And yes, high fuel pressure can cause poor mileage. Basically too much fuel pressure will push fuel through the injector body all the time and cause the injector to "drip" fuel....

I have not done any checks or repairs other than putting a gauge on the fuel bowl and measuring pressure. When I get time to work on the fuel system I will check those things.
Thanks guys.

LOL... Reeally?

Do you understand that it takes 400psi to overcome the poppet spring right?

Too high of fuel pressure can cause many issues, including poor mileage, but its not going to cause your injectors to "drip".

There is no perfect fuel pressure, every truck is different, every type of injector is different. Anywhere from 60-75psi is fine.

What else could be experienced with fuel pressure that is too high? What other symptoms?
Power gain/loss, excessive rattle, etc.?

Yes. Really... If the injectors are worn they'll be drippy... My 7.3 has this issue currently...

What part of the 7.3 injector gets "drippy"...

Short of a broken nozzle, its not possable.

Worn fuel pumps, fuel leaks, worn injectors from too much air being forced into the fuel system... And yes more injection noise.

If they injector is old and worn like mine are there is excess fuel that is forced through it. My truck runs worse with the new fuel pump and more pressure. Idles rough, smokes at idle, etc...

If I crack open the fuel drain it gets better but if I reinstall the older, lower pressure pump it runs even better.
